I saw this happen

Was scaffolding at the time (I was 18, wow). The guy I was working with said "I've never seen one take off from this close before" followed by "Oh, I didn't want to see that".

Don't do ARCBOOK, but remember that happening if it was on the end of Marhams runway!

All 5 crew got out pretty sharpish.
You can imagine a fully laden K2 (XL232) took a while to put out (yes XPL, it was indeed Marham). Just rolling for take off when one of her Conways suffered a catastrophic failure. Broken turbines through the fuel tanks iirc. Was quite a surreal thing to see. Next day all I could see was part of her tail section on a very melted runway.

There were some AERIAL shots of the burnt out airframe, I'll attempt to find one! ;)

My thought's exactly mate. 50 odd ton's burning Avtur into Swaffham not good (although I did get expelled from the school there, NOT PROUD of that).

The Concordski crash in Paris shows what would have happened if she had got off the ground and then suffered the same failure. More than one Vulcan was lost the same way. :(

When a turbine disc gets out, you have what amounts to a massively powerful circular saw blade looking for something to destroy. It's one of the reasons why embedded engines are much less frequently used in civil aircraft.

One Olympus 301 has twice the power of a complete F1 starting grid.
XM655 has four of them, all serviceable.

I thought that the Concordski crash in paris was an airframe not engine related crash?

And the account of XM610 lost due to one such turbine disc failure.

There have been lots of causes quoted for the crash. Three of them are discussed briefly here - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tupolev_Tu-144

I was working at RR at the time, and we had a film of the accident from an angle that I haven't seen on u-tube. It appeared that an inboard engine turbine disc came up through the wing and took out a lot of fuel lines.

I guess we will never know the full story.

Now that brings back memories!
My dad was an AEO on 55 and later the OCU around that time - I was at Polytech when I heard about the incident on the news. You can imagine the screaming headlines did nothing to allay any concerns I had about Dad's safety!

Reading the fire crew's account in the link is interesting though I find it a bit strange that he mentions Swaffham. The a/c was taking off on RW24 (ie roughly WSW heading) which, had it got airborne would have, as usual, put Fincham at risk. As Swaffham is almost exactly due East of Marham I reckon that sleepy little market town would have been quite safe!
Also, the a/c was nothing like airborne as the failure took place as the throttles were brought up so she was still basically on the piano keys - might have stood a better chance of surviving if they had continued the take-off as I heard that the burning fuel caught up with the a/c when it stopped...
Jjust a couple of thoughts from me.

Anyway, I always found it amazing that such a large lump of metal could so disappear in a fire! The aerial shots showed the effect of the crosswind as the right wing was almost untouched, the left was ash - crazy!

cheers
Rick
