There is no comparison mate. Honestly, you have to witness it with your own ears to fully comprehend the shear power of this wonderful beast.
They don't just hurt your ears my friend. You will be comforting your internal organs for some time afterwards.

The only way to find out? Go see one ;)

I forgot to say, but as Jigsaw says, you don't just hear them, you feel them! The earth seems to shake! In fact, I'm petty certain a totally deaf person (ie someone who has spent too much time near Lightnings without ear protection! :)) ) would feel it, even if they couldn't hear it! The other thing is the heat. At the May CWJ day, I stood on the bank at the end of the runway (not directly behind - slightly to one side) for the Lightning run. As it set off down the runway, we got hit a wave of hot air, which literally felt like someone had opened a massive oven door! That's the beauty of the CWJ days. You will never get closer to live jets anywhere else!

As for whether Lightnings are louder than Typhoons, I would think so, but I've ever been as close to a Typhoon at full chat as I have a Lightning. The Typhoon certainly doesn't seem to vibrate through your whole body though, which is something I remember from seeing Lightnings at airshows as a kid. Although from what I vaguely remember, a Lightning display consisted of a couple of fast passes and a vertical climb, before it had to go back to base for fuel!

Here's my video attempt.

Only videoed a few runs on my phone as I decided to watch the runs not through a viewfinder for once!

Great line up of aircraft there. Shame I couldnt make it. The Nimrod fits in well. Its just a shame that none of the aircraft are allowed to fly. What crowds it would attract then! This event coupled with some flying displays could be a show second to none. Great pic and vids.

The BBMF were supposed to do a flypast at both of this year's events. In May, a cross wind at Coningsby prevented them from taking off. Given the wind on Sunday, I assume the same may have been true this time, although I didn't hear any announcements.
