Cold War Jets 29th Aug 2010 Pics

Postby RLN » Sun Aug 29, 2010 9:50 pm

Good to see some of you again. Cold wind all day, together with rain showers for the first half and then sunny later on. Yes, Cluny was there. Teasin' Tina decided to rip up a bit of asphalt, but thanks to Sopwith the debris was collected before it caused any damage. Gaz did turn up in a transit and picked up a few bits, but then looked exhausted and retired to the van and disappeared.
Andy, the Lightning run was the best I've ever seen. The afterburners seemed to be on for a long time - I'm still trying to get my internal organs back where they should be. I don't know if you'll see this, but thanks LPG.

You'll see that Naddy's son, Cameron, wanted to bake a cake for Andy, which he did and I happened to be in the QRA hangar when Cameron handed it over.

Nice vid. You can see Tina rip the runway up at 08.32 in - the puff of debris amongst the rest of the crap that blew in our faces.

They shoved the throttles forward before they began their run, and there was a very distinct howl. But when they did their run, the howl wasn't as pronounced.

I'm conscious that over the years my hearing has deteriorated slightly, because things which used to seem really loud, such as F1 or other unsilenced racing cars, and most military jet aircraft, [and the wife :ymdevil: ] don't seem quite as loud as they used to when I was younger. But Lightnings are still loud enough to hurt!

I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed a Vulcan-esque howl from the Nimrod. I thought it's run was superb! I also thought it was possibly louder than the Victor?

I was of two minds whether or not to go yesterday. Our cat died a couple of days before, and I woke up feeling quite despondent, but in the end I'm glad I did go. Always a good day.

I didn't think there were as many people there this time, but it may have been the fact that, because I didn't get there until midday I drove straight in without queuing!

There is no comparison mate. Honestly, you have to witness it with your own ears to fully comprehend the shear power of this wonderful beast.
They don't just hurt your ears my friend. You will be comforting your internal organs for some time afterwards.

The only way to find out? Go see one ;)

It doesn't get much louder than standing behind one :))

The Lightning is the loudest plane I have ever heard. Like Jiggy says you can feel the rumble through your body \:D/ After filming the Cranfield Lightning from the back my hearing was slightly totally buggered :ymdevil: Lightnings.... they're AWESOME! :D

In memory of a very dear friend - Mike Pearson

Very fond memories of Robbie Gilvary - DTs 1st Vulcan Captain who taught DT all he knew.
