Aircraft Collection in Burgundy

Postby Fifties Fanatic » Tue Aug 17, 2010 3:28 pm

Just back from hols which included a visit to the Chateau de Savigny, just outside Beaune in Burgundy which houses the largest collection of cold war aircraft I have ever seen, although most in a poor state of repair, as well as two museums of motor cycles, the Abarth museum and about 3,000 model aircraft. It is an amazing place and was a complete surprise. Has anyone else been?

Marvellous thanks, Mayfly - weather was hot and sunny most of the time and we explored a part of France we had never visited before. :D :D When I have got the hang of uploading pictures I'll post some of those I took of the museums.

I expected to see a load of purple aeroplanes. Didn't Prince sing a song about them?

Thanks for sharing mate :D

Core, some real beauties in the black and white shots, someone needs to get them inside and start the restoration before they turn in to dust! ;)

They do indeed, XPL, but M. Christophe Pont, the owner, is, I suspect a horder rather than a collector and is simply accruing more and more aircraft in various stages of disrepair and storing them outside. There is nowhere inside to store them. I am sure he would have museum curators and private collectors queueing up for examples. I found it slightly dispiriting knowing that gradually they would all rust away. :(

Is that a Gloster Javelin on the left hand side of the first pic?

Have you got any more photos? Looks a fascinating visit...

Good idea, then. I think I've got most of them being very much of my period, but there a few which I wasn't 100% sure about. I wish I had more time but we had somewhere else to be. I will likely be back next year and allow more time for the aircraft, the Abarth Collection, about 3,000 model aircraft, and several hundred bikes and motorbikes. :D

There's no shortcut other than uploading them all to photobucket and downloading, is there? It seems very longwinded....and time consuming :(

Edit them on your computer, pick the best and then upload them to Photobucket! Then put the kettle on and wait mate! ;)

Well there are OTHER Photo hosting sites, I have tried some and always end up returning to Photobucket, and it is FREE!
