A Very Sad Weekend

Postby Mayfly » Sun Aug 22, 2010 1:54 pm

On Friday a German helicopter pilot lost his life practising for an airshow in Belarus.

Yesterday a Norwegian Spitfire pilot lost his life practising for an airshow when the aircraft apparently flipped on landing.

Today the Swift Glider crashed at Shoreham but this time thankfully the pilot walked away.

A very sad weekend :(

Condolences to all.....

:-o Thats terrible, condolences to all indeed.
I heard about the Swift going down on VTTSC earlier. Thankfully he'll live to tell the tale.

I saw the video of the helicopter crash, it was really not nice. Glad the Swift pilot survived but sad for the other 2. RIP :(

Not Guy Westgate. I think he was flying a twister.

That's awful to read - pilots inevitably risk their lives for our pleasure and our thoughts must be with those bereaved families. But at least there was a survivor, hopefully not badly injured. :( :(

By all accounts he walked away from it before the emergency services arrived..

That is, at least, some consolation.

I didn't see it (I was just walking up from the Vulcan tent) but the commentator was mentioning the loose tow rope which was then let go (whether planned or by necessity I don't know). He was going SW at the time. He did a right and was coming round for a landing? from NE. He then went out of my view but apparently put a wingtip on the runway.

Several newspapers (no surprise) are stating that the Glider came down nose first and disintegrated on impact. Not true. There is a video on youtube which shows a relatively intact glider on the runway straight after "impact".

Video shows pilot getting out and lying on the ground:

Thanks for that and the rescue services were there in just on 1 minute. Pretty good, I would say.

Well he came down on the runway so it would be rather shocking if the airport fire and rescue hadn't got there in that time! Shorehams response time for the Hurricane crash was also excellent especially considering the location and difficulty getting there due to freeloaders, sadly nothing they could do for that one though :(
