Well I guess that it just proves that you can fool people with money to give it away!

I think that is possibly the BEST way to treat this misuse of two wonderful airframes. They still exist in a slightly different form and may just inspire someone to go take a look at them as they were intended to be! ;)

In a quiet moment I have just stripped out the total bollox from the narrative .........

Harrier and Jaguar - commissioned for the Duveens Galleries - is her largest work to date. The two aircraft create a striking juxtaposition with the Tate's neo-classical surroundings.

The piece is more about our ambivalence to war and how on one level we loathe it and on another level we celebrate it

The Jaguar's polish is important because you see yourself reflected in it - you can't detach yourself from the object

I quite like it............

To those of us who are parents can connect with the Jaguar. Many a model plane has been found on the floor in that pose.

The Harrier....... With the feathers paint job could be assimilated to game hanging in the Butchers window.

In any event it's nicer than seeing them on a fire dump or languishing unloved somewhere.

There That's me arty farty bit done for this year. :D

Very good ... I can see that ... if that's what they'd said :D

But a Harrier is a Hawk - a bird of prey - and wouldn't be seen in a butchers in the first place :D

And the Jaguar on the kids bedroom floor isn't highly polished so you can't detach yourself from it - you just pick it up and put it away (or tread on it) :p

Nice try though - have a long rest now - you deserve it :)) :))

Stand corrected on bird of prey.

I went to the Tate modern "Art" Museum last year and it was the biggest waste of about 3-4 hours akin to watching England trying to claw their way out of a terrible group in the World Cup. If some of that is art then call me Biggles. Glad it was free because I would have been gutted to have paid to gone in having seen some of the content.

Funny how the MOD let those planes go to be used for so called art but a group here in the US tried to get some A-10s to use for fire tankes but the Pentagon would not let them have any.

Peter Hitchens speaks the truth - todays MOS.......

A beautiful achievement reduced to tat

I don’t suppose Sir Sidney Camm, Sir Stanley Hooker or Ralph Hooper ever regarded themselves as artists.

But this trio, who designed the wonderful plane which became famous as the Harrier (and in which I once flew for a glorious, if queasy, 45 minutes), created a thing of great beauty.

Aeroplanes have to be beautiful or they wouldn’t fly, but I’ll leave it to you to work out why that might be.

I would be interested to know how the self-styled ‘artist’ Fiona Banner can claim any real credit for the retired Sea Harrier hung by its tail from the ceiling of what I think in future must be called the Tat Gallery in London.

Did she hoist it up there herself? Could she, sat alone in a room with a pencil and a sheet of paper, make a decent drawing of a Boeing 747 from memory?

Yet this woman, hitherto famous for displaying a long-written description of a pornographic film on a wall, and calling that ‘art’, now receives sighs of praise from our cultural elite.

With fake profundity, Ms Banner asks how an object designed as a ‘killing machine’ can evoke such enthusiasm. Well, apart from the fact that it was designed above all to fly, it rather depends on whom it was meant to kill, and under what conditions.

Maybe defending peaceful islanders against an illegal invasion doesn’t make Ms Banner enthusiastic, but I think it’s a pretty good use of human skill.
