RAF Davidstow Moor

Postby Spitfire » Wed Jun 23, 2010 6:51 pm

In the office I am the accredited aircraft nerd - and my colleagues are always asking questions about things they see out and about down here in Cornwall - Recently we were looking for information about a plaque near here of an aircraft crash and from the description given I thought it sounded like a Beaufighter - but after he took a picture of the plaque I see its actually a Beaufort AW288 listed on here.....

http://www.rafdavidstowmoor.org/pages/crash_log/crashlog42.html

The one we were looking for is ....
24-07-1942
0855hrs
Bristol Beaufort II AW288 1 Overseas Aircraft Despatch Unit RAF Portreath crashed at Rosgrogga Chapel, Camborne. Broke out of low cloud and crashed into a building.

But looking further down a few days I saw this and thought Nicholas & Tom may be interested ..........
28-07-1942
1620hrs
North American Mustang I AG478 XV-? 2 Squadron based at RAF Sawbridgeworth crashed at Castle-an-Dinas, Madron, 2½ miles N of Chyandour Police Station. The aircraft was completely smashed and P/O B E Hawes was killed.

Castle-An-Dinas is here

It was called that because of this

I couldn't get over just how many tragic crashes there were down here :-o :-o and that's just 1942 :(

Spitfire,

Did you ever find that plaque for Beaufort AW288?

If not, I know where it is. My friend and I are investigating that crash. It hit the former Roscroggan Chapel, near Camborne.

Best regards,
Mark Steele
