Spitfire V Messerschmitt

Postby Spitfire » Sun Dec 14, 2008 6:32 pm

A few years ago Squadron Leader Paul Day - then CO of BBMF - did a comparison between the Spitfire and the ME109 on the ground. I was astounded at the time just how very small an ME109 cockpit was/is - especially with that horrendous cockpit canopy lid down. I particularly like the comment that he wouldn't want to go to war in it ;)

I just found this remarkable programme again on Youtube - it's in five parts and it does have foreign subtitles - but this is episode 3 with him reviewing the ME109 for the first time............'Up the front it's all Krupps of Essen' :D

At the end of episode 2 he does the same thing with the Spitfire

the Luftwaffe actually had a height limit on its Me109 crews for this specific reason. i remember talking to the bloke who used to regularly fly Black Six, who also flew Spits - i remember his words (but not his name!) very clearly - "yes, it's cramped - nice to fly but f**k going to war in it!" =))
