I heard yesterday that light aircraft were ok to operate below 5000ft but can't find any confirmation of this.

I've read (probably of fighter control forum) that they can fly, but are being advised not to, as a small amount of the ash is begining to fall now at low lvels.

As its NATS that's closed the airports & not CAA I would assume they can. Didn't Nick mention somewhere that there were some buzzing around his neck of the woods!!

There were one or two flying over here yesterday (none so far today), but I definitely read that air traffic were advising light aircraft to only fly if they have to.
I know LNAA were still able to fly in an emergency.

Plenty planes out at both local flying schools today - just checked the webcams - looks like they're ignoring the advice!

It's not just the people that are stuck abroad that are inconvenienced... we've got 2 directors stuck in Holland right now and can't get back.

They were due to catch a train to Calais and with the Eurostar fully booked and ferry foot passengers too I was going to have to drive to Calais to go on a company-funded beer and fag run rescue them...

the bastids have decided to hop on one of our customer's lorries instead so bang goes my nice Friday afternoon jolly to France ~x( :))

Just heard on LBC Radio that NATS has announced there will be no aircraft movements in England And Wales until at least 0700 Saturday. However, restrictions in Scotland and Ireland will be lifted at 1900 this evening.

I must say that, where Mama Wedgy and I live (in 'Sarth' London) it is eerily quiet. We are on one of the flight paths into Heathrow and the absence of the 'planes is VERY strange!

I don't know how to post a screen dump, but at the moment one of only two aircraft in British airspace is Iceland Air.

There's a small airstrip just outside my village and there have been a few movements going on there today, seems they are okay at low level - I suppose if the ash is at 20000ft it wont affect a microlight unless it starts to settle.

Saw on the news that there will be a window over Scotland tomorrow morning and BA are operating 7 flights from the US to Glasgow and there might be a window for Manchester to take some tomorrow as well -all up in the air at the moment though. Manchester had 2 in and 3 out around lunchtime, I think they said they were empty just positioning without passengers - maybe that way they are not deemed to be commercial!
