It's basically just a very wide angle lens, but gives quite a bit of distortion as you can see. I'm not sure the angle of mine, but some can 'see' 90 degrees to the side. I think you can also get software to unwrap pictures on your PC.

So basically it's more of a special effect. But it does mean you can get all of a Lightning's cockpit in one shot.
