Engine oil system breathers. The scavenge oil returning to the tank contains a lot of sealing air, so it is passed through a centrifugal seperator (driven by the LP compressor), from which the oil goes back to the tank and the air goes out of that pipe.

One Olympus 301 has twice the power of a complete F1 starting grid.
XM655 has four of them, all serviceable.

Thanks, Sooty. Sorry, but what do you mean by sealing air? I know in my trade, but it may be different in yours.

Much the same, I suspect. At each bearing, the oil is kept in the bearing space by a labyrinth seal, the middle of which is fed with pressurised air. Most of the air flows away from the bearing space, but some flows into the bearing space and exits with the scavenge oil.

The air which flows away from the bearing space is clean, and can be dumped directly. Most of it goes out of the engine breather under the centre engine door.

The air which exits with the scavenge oil is messy, even after centrifugal separation, and has to be piped all the way to the back.

Thanks, Sooty again. Yes, much the same, but terminology in different industries usually means the same. :-BD

Is this some sort of emergency generator that can be dropped in to the slipstream ??

Image

And some of these show her age don't they - despite all the years of loving attention she is still in a pretty bad state behind the scenes - tarting all that up would cost a few bob though :-o

Top image is the Ram Air Turbine
This is dropped into the slipstream if all the electrics go off-line so that there is a modicum of electrical services to allow the crew to try to recover the situation.

Lower image, well if it ain't structural, and there is no corrosion who is going to get all het up about some flaky paint??

Thanks - it looked like a turbine but I wasn't sure ;)

Re flaky paint - its just the model building perfectionist in me - I can't help it :ymblushing: I'd have to be in there with a wire brush and a pot of paint .... I'd be no good on aircraft restoration obviously :ymblushing: :ymblushing: :D
