Re: Kitty Hawk Descendent

Postby Recce1 » Sun Mar 07, 2010 11:45 am

Could the Kitty Hawk descendent from the Grumman F6F Hellcat series? They had cowling flaps all around the rear of the engine, canopy and rear fuselage integrated, some like the F6F-3 & F6F-5 had a large radiator scoop on front below prop cooling opening, and wheels that went straight back and rotated for storage. What stumps me are the nose mounted cannons or 50 cals. I also like the Curtis P-40 as a candidate but it has what I call knee caps for the landing gear. Then there's the Vultee P-66 Vanguard. It sported four 30 cals in the wings and two 50 cals in the nose.

Mr Mayfly sir thats no replica P40!! It is in fact a P40C Tomahawk (I think you have (or had?) one flying with The Fighter Collection?)
There is also a P36 Hawk being restored (at Omaka I believe) which is the forerunner to the V12 engined P40 range. (as the P36 had a radial engine). Sorry Recce1 but the Hellcat flew well after the P36 and P40, plus Mr Curtiss may take offence at being associated with a competitor's product. :-)
Cheers

Ooops sorry Miss Mayfly. I'm so used to the New Zealand website I go to where there are NO (current) women members! Apparently there were one or two but we must have scared them off!!
And yes you did say you didn't recall what it was so i shall apologise for any offence.
I am quick to correct mistakes these days as too many people spread information as "facts" when they are plainly not! Like the individual I met a couple of weeks ago who claimed the Lancaster on display up in Auckland ( B.VII NX665) wasn't a Lancaster because it had 20mm cannon fitted! Grrrrrrrr! He still lives...................but only just!

To be fair I am the only female you'll find on here every day, we have a few others that pop on every now and again...most frequently Hihonyr8811

but it would take more than that to offend me, they try very hard you know :p
