Typhoon Project Updates

Postby ActionArt » Tue Nov 10, 2009 7:42 pm

Here's a look at the Typhoon project in progress. Keep in mind it's FAR from complete.

This shows them bombing and strafing AA guns on the East bank of the Rhine for operation Varsity.

I still need to add many muzzle flashes, hits, explosions, etc and hundreds of Horsa gliders and paratroopers going overhead. Also some landing craft crossing the water.

There is quite a bit to do on the Typhoon itself yet as far as small details and pilot. Wear and tear will be added at the end.

Hope you enjoy and crits most welcome :)

Sure you are! Any aviation enthusiast is. In the past I've found that critiques from other professional artists are less than useful. The very things they criticize the most are what my customers like the most. If I listened to them I'd be out of business ;) You can just point out what you like or don't like, no experience necessary.

It's about 60% done now. The water craft will be a challenge. There is lots to do in the distance as well.

Yes Dougs, there will be shells spraying into the water from the 3rd Typhoon back (shooting at the gun nearest the bank) and also I'm going to have a gun firing at the landing craft (not there yet). I always like the look of bullets hitting the water :)

=)) :)

It does remind me of a time with motorbikes and cops...anyway, I grew up at time when every kid got a .22 riffle at about 6yrs old and went out to play with the cousins. Sometimes an uncle would even lend you a .270 or 30-06. They made a wonderful splash. There were more than a few close calls. I think the parents were secretly hoping to reduce their workload :p

Yes, the bright thing is a muzzle flash from a 88. It needs some work and I'll actually have to make it bigger to match reality! :-o

They had one hell of a muzzle blast!

Thanks all :)

Len

Have you got a copy of;

The Typhoon & Tempest Story by Chris Thomas & Christopher Shores published by ARMS AND ARMOUR PRESS in 1988.

It is by far the best reference book that I have found on the subject.

The following series is also very useful;

2nd TACTICAL AIR FORCE vols 1 to 4 by Christopher Shores and Chris Thomas published by Midland Publishing!

Volume One - Spartan to Normandy.

Volume Two - Breakout to Bodenplatte.

Volume Three - From the Rhine to Victory.

Volume Four - Weapons and Tactics.

Thanks for the great info Dave! No I don't have that one, I'll have to look for it. I have the "Typhoon and Tempest, the Canadian Story" by Hugh Halliday.

Thanks for the other references too.

I'll update the images soon. I was hoping this weekend but it didn't work out that way.

Yes, I'm afraid so. Sad though it may be, geeks kind of run the world now. B-)

I'm hoping to finish this one up during the Christmas holidays. We'll see...

Just updated the images. It's starting to come alive now. I added the Horsa gliders but I still need to work on the placement and also need to add paratroopers being dropped in the distance. Now I'm working on the landing craft crossing the river and there is a lot to do on the bullet strikes, hits in the water, muzzle flashes etc.

If anyone has a good picture of landing craft used in Operation Varsity, please post!

Cheers! :)

Thanks Dave, I didn't know there was such a thing! I did find some images but it would be good to check to make sure they're the right ones :)

Also I'm looking for any good pics of 20mm (or similar) rounds hitting the water. I want to get that just right ;)

If anyone has any, please share.

Cheers!

Dave Ex-Plumber had some really good luck
with the Landingcraft Association about two
months back. They replied to his e-mailed
question almost immediately. Because of that,
I'd expect they'd be more than happy to send
you whatever you require via the net.

I'll look for some bullet pics later. Vids of use
to you?

Coming up dry on pics, but there are
plenty of vids when I did a search --
too many to point at........

I guess the photographers were too
busy ducking!

Movie footage, mostly.
