My favourite WWII aircraft! excluding Spits and Daks

Well like my father, I have always had a fascination for the wonderful MOSQUITO in all its many guises!

The first real MULTI-ROLE STEALTH aircraft! ;)

agreed - although the venerable Lanc has to be equal second

but then, i also like the unsung 'heroes' like the Lysander and the top-secret Westland Autogyros that were used to calibrate the Chain Home system

by the way - i assume World War 11 came after World War 10, but before the upcoming 12?

If Mr. Pedant has finished.

After a great deal of thought (OK 10 secs) It has to be the Mossie. As fast as the Spit - multi role... beautiful and sex on wings (the Guinot girls aren't in it). Then there is the Typhoon.

I shall also nominate the wonderful TEMPEST a true sportscar of the air!

Yep - Mosquito for me too, although I do have a soft spot for the beautiful lines of the Corsair.

Well, I've given it a lot of thought, and I
have to say that, taking ALL factors into
consideration, my favo(u)rite WWII A/C
just HAS to be:

This "G" is one from my Dad's unit, 379th
Bomb Group (H), based at Kimbolton.

That's fascinating Dan. I worked with a pilot from the 379th, Robert Cardwell. He is such a fantastic man and was a great help on the project. I wonder if he knew your dad. Now I'm in contact with a family that lives right on the edge of the Kimbolton base and they collect memorabilia from that time. Is your father still alive?

Anyway, this is the project I worked on with Mr. Cardwell. It sure was great to talk with him at length about his experiences:

As my Dad would have said: "Well, I'm not sure
how fascinating it is..."

He passed away in 1991, so it's been a while now,
and was with that unit from the day it was formed
until it disbanded. Not aircrew, but had a very
unique role in the organization. Of course, if he
HAD been aircrew, I'm not sure who would be typing
this today! I'll tell some stories in the next day or two,
but his time in the 379th was comprised of both
wonderful and terrible experiences all thrown in the
blender.

Dan4th

PS: Just looked at your link -- I've always found it
amazing how these guys describe harrowing moments
in such an off-hand way!

Yes, it is amazing sometimes. Most pilots I talk to talk about those experiences in about the same way as they talk about driving to the store.

As for favorite aircraft, I have to vote for the Mosquito and Typhoon. Love them both!!! The Typhoon just looks like it was built to fight and look out if you get in the way!
