well i must almost be right then - it's an early 737 judging by the engines - 737-100 or 200 series?

stumped mate - the only 737-based a/c i can find any reference to is the 737-7ES - the 'AWACS' type 737 - but it looks absolutely NOTHING like that ~x(

How about one of these then SM

Its an M55 and if its wrong I'll regret this post.

An high-altitude aircraft with an high-aspect ratio U-2 like wing and twin tail booms. The obvious role is reconnaissance, but the M-17 was in fact designed to hunt reconnaissance balloons --- in the '50s and also in the '80s, the US used high-altitude balloons for recce missions over the USSR. The later M-55 or M-17RM was twin-engined and optimized for reconnaissance.
A two-seat version is under development and will enter service in 1997.

"Originally identified in 1982 by US recon- naissance satellites as the 'Ram-M' single-seat high-altitude reconnaissance aircraft, and later codenamed 'Mystic' by NATO, the twin-boom straight-wing jet, currently publicized as a high-altitude research aircraft able to carry around 1500kg (3,305 lb) of sensors, is now known to exist in two versions.

The first of two prototype aircraft, designated M-17 Stratosfera ('Mystic-A'), first flew in 1988 and are powered by a single 68.6kN ( 15,430 lb) thrust Rybinsk RD-36-51V turbojet developed from the Tu-144 SST powerplant. The M-55 Geofizika ('Mystic-B') , has two 49 kN (11,025 hp) thrust Perm/Solovyev PS-30-V12 turbojets mounted side-by- side behind a raised cockpit installed in a longer nose, together with a reduced span wing.

The role of the 'Mystic-B' is described as environmental sampling missions or high-altitude research and endurance in this role is claimed as over 4 hours loiter capability at 20000 m (65,600 ft).

The role of the 'Mystic-B' is described as environmental sampling missions or high-altitude research and endurance in this role is claimed as over 4 hours loiter capability at 20000 m (65,600 ft).

A further variant of the M-55 is reported to be under development with wingroot mounted engines installed in a conventional fuselage carrying a sweptback tail unit . Two 'Mystic-A' prototypes, followed by two 'Mystic-B' and two pre-production 'Mystic-Bs' were flying by 1992.

Type: single-seat high-altitude research jet aircraft

Powerplant: two 49 kN (11,025 lb) Perm/Solovyev PS-30-V12 turbojets

Performance: maximum level speed 750 km/h (466 mph); endurance at 17000m (55,775 ft) 7 hours

Dimensions: span 40.7 m (123 ft 6 in); length 24.0 m (78 ft 9 in); height 4.8m (15 ft 9 in)"
