While I was at Gutersloh 18 Sqn were there with the Chinook. One day I had a brain wave and phoned their ops room to see if there was anything going back to the UK and was there any chance of a lift.
Bloke in the ops room thought I must be very well connected as they had only just decided to send one back to Odiham and there were some seats available.
I reported to the big hanger bright and early and threw my little bag in the back of the cabin, along with a spare set of blades in boxes and a Caterham sports car (one of the gro bags was posted back to Lyenham and they were dropping his car off for him.)
After a short briefing we took off and headed West, Chinooks are meant to be fast for a helicopter but I guess they are not meant for long commuter flights first stop was at Wildenrath where they were in the middle of a Taceval air raid very surreal sitting in the Chopper in civvies watching the guys out side doing the refuel in full NBC gear, it was a hot day too (I would have had some sympathy, but if you can't take a joke don't join one.)
Then after a short break to put on an immersion suit (can't remember the time of year but apparently the Sea was just too cold) and a life jacket. We were off again over the Chanel and into Manston.
We had to stop at Manston to clear Customs, do you have anything to declare. What's the duty on a Caterham and 250 fags? Guess they checked all the pax and crew were entitled to enter the country! Probably the only time I got my passport checked.
Since the car was being delivered to Lyneham I left the thing there cos my Mum and Dad were living near Bristol at the time.
I think the trip took about 8 hours which while it was not as fast as a Herc or a 737 was definitely faster than my 2CV!
Oh, and if you ever get a trip in one remember your ear defenders, I forgot mine and 8 hours is a long time to sit in an oil drum with some loony battering the top of it with a hammer.
