I have no knowledge of this incidence, I know it is very difficult for the rear crew to abandon the aircraft when the undercarriage is down, infact almost impossible to ensure it is done without harm, therefore the pilots would not abandon the aircraft as they would condemn the rear crew.

I've just spoken with DT & he says he would not be particularly concerned about putting the aircraft down under those circumstances - tho' it wouldn't be some thing he would volunteer for.......
In memory of a very dear friend - Mike Pearson

Very fond memories of Robbie Gilvary - DTs 1st Vulcan Captain who taught DT all he knew.

not my field personally but would the cockpit canopy be blown on approach to allow escape once it stopped in the event that the nose gear colapsed as looking at the pic again the exit is still closed .(cant imagine anyone would want to exit underneathfor obvious reasons)

The airbrakes are driven electrically, so hydraulic system damage wouldn't have made any difference.

Wasn't the canopy blown so that the pilots could eject but there was something about the guys in the back putting the pins in the seats saying that either they all got out or none at all?

Ah ha, here we go...

Damien's Website wrote:Also the canopy has been blown but never really talked about was the fact that the crew in the rear, who had no ejection seats, inserted the safety pins into the pilot's ejection seats, and told them they would get out all together, or not at all.

Here's the rather blatent Kiwi Roundel applied to XH562. Apparently, she arrived back at Waddington like this, to be quickly towed into the hanger for a re-application of our markings!

I met a guy from the Canadian Warplane Museum in Hamilton Canada (home of the 'other lancaser') who lived in Newzealand at the time and actually went aboard the crashed vulcan and had a look arround before being moved on by the MP's small world!

.......and in the case of the pilot, Keith Sturt, to then be wrongly blamed for the crash for the next fifty-plus years, mostly in recent years by people who really should know better. ~x( ~x(
