Any guesses?

Postby PhantomAviator » Fri Jul 09, 2010 3:16 pm

Today at approximately 1330hrs I happened to be in the garden and looked towards the East.
Moving at a considerable rate of knots was what looked at first like a rocket, the trail was a great distance behind it.
The object was silver reflective.
Then on watching it it changed direction by some 15 degrees and seemed to level out. (perhaps it was the curvature of the earth).
The object on passing overhead but to my north, so not directly overhead to me, looked to be an aircraft with a slim long body and short triangular wings, similar to an A-12 but with no engine nacelles apparent on the wings, the single trail being left behind was still only appearing some vast distance behind it, and didn't seem to be of the standard trail left by our modern day aircraft.
Total time taken for it to go from eastern horizon to west-north-west horizon (with the direction change from due west to approximately 15degrees from west to west-north-west) was about 120 seconds.
Apart from myself my wife saw it also, she commented on how fast it was moving.
So other than myself and my wife someone else must have seen it.
Anyone?

Forgot to say it was at an altitude greater than normal commercial aircraft.

Wrong shape, they were what we had hidden in the hangars at St Mawgan.
Bugger let the secret out the bag.

I am ex-RAF so I do know what an aircraft looks like.

If the trail left had been with donuts then I would have gone fo rthe Aurora but as the con trail wasn't I obviously didn't.

May well be true in this specific case, but I'm not sure it holds good as a generalisation. ;)
Sooty

One Olympus 301 has twice the power of a complete F1 starting grid.
XM655 has four of them, all serviceable.

Damn, caught out again.

First tour was Coningsby on Phantom F4's., then the Spey bay at Woodhall Spa.
Last complete airframe was XH558 at Bruntingthorpe.

In reference to the craft I saw, I can only discribe it as I have already done so, like an a12 Blackbird (SR71) but with no engine nacelles and a single con trail from the rear but many aircraft lengths away.

Don't know if this is connected but there have been reports on other fora of triangular shaped a/c that weren't either 558 or a typhoon.

It wouldn't have been BAE Taranis I suppose? Wasn't that suppose to be flight tested around this time?

Just checked on that Mayfly and it is not the aircraft I saw.
The one I saw had a long fuselage and triangular wings at rear.
Single engine.

Thanks.

I have done a long search using the internet and the closest I can come to what I actually saw is the Northrop F-19A Specter(Loral).
But i am sure that it was claimed it does not exist.
But then again they said that about B2 Stealth etc.
