RIP Nimrod

Postby Mayfly » Fri Mar 26, 2010 8:13 am

Very sad day :(

Thanks Nimrod for the lives you've save & the crews who crewed them & those who also lost their lives in doing so!!

Who will take over the search & rescue now? Especially in the short term :(

Tis a sad day indeed, but what I dont understand is why they are getting rid, when we dont have a replacement yet. [-x

we will have to rely on some other `old bird` to keep us going now....... X(

They are retiring them today :((

There is no new a/c ready to take over yet, although the MOD have said other a/c will step in to the breech tbh there are very few a/c spare to take on the role, so there is a great worry lives will be lost on the search & recuse side :( :( :(

Very quiet round here today. Woken up at 0630 the other morning by one at full power directly overhead, quite an unusual flight path.

Even when we can see them up close and personal it's just such a waste to the Armed Forces

Are the R1s coming out of service today, or just the MR2s?

Am I right in saying that they are binging in some new ones in a few years time, the one that was at RIAT last year?

Yes - the MRA4. Currently taking shape in the hangars at Woodford. Think the order is down to around 9 now. First production model flew last year and is undergoing trials. There were 3 prototypes, one of which has appeared at RIAT on a couple of occasions.

Good article here regarding the retirement of the MR2s: http://www.flightglobal.com/articles/2010/03/30/339943/saying-goodbye-to-the-mighty-hunter.html

Here's the latest on the MRA4: http://www.aviationnews.eu/2010/03/12/raf-nimrod-mra4-declared-ready-to-train/
