Without malice to the Engineers.......

I think a lot of supporters visualise 558 looking like a new a/c behind the scenes simply because she was 'restored'. I know a few would like to get there hands on her & do a bit of titivating :))

Oh no - absolutely no problem with the engineers - they've done the bit that gets her in the air and that's fine and much appreciated ..... in fact I have a Windermere picture on my desktop which clearly shows her - uummm - 'rushed' paint job on the top - and ooopppsss they missed a bit :p

Image

I'm just a nerdy perfectionist and would like to get her all gleamy and tarted up ... I suppose the other school of thought is that she's sort of 'used original' as she is ......fine balancing act i suppose ;) :D

Well, she does have a really nice
patina to her, after all -- as these
superb detail shots from the Esteemed
Mackrick only go to show.

Over time I've come to love 558 just
the way she is, and I believe that making
her a brand-new old aircraft would be a
big mistake.

Even once she's all retired and permanently
tucked away indoors I think it's important
to leave the warts and so forth right as they
are!

I agree with you Dan4th 558 is like a old well worn pair of favourite slippers - she has a personality of her own.

SF my remark wasn't aimed solely at you but other have said much the same about how worn she she underneath her exterior.....

bad choice of words on my part SF - I know where you are coming from...there have been remarks on other fora about her cosmetic appearance..... hence my remark about others who would like to titivate :p

not sure how it's happened but every remark to do with 558 now seems to offend someone!!

I'm with D4th. Our venerable Vulcan is like a once beautiful lady who shows her age, the odd line or two a bit of patchy skin in certain light, but she carries it well. She has no warts and her patina is merely proof of her original quality. You paint perfectionists could always buy a really big Vulcan painting by numbers kit, some tins of paint and a load of flitch brushes. Complete the painting and then with a panel of Spitfire, Xpl and a few others select the winner of a Painting Pedants Prize for whoever did the worst bit. Hours of endless fun to be had there, if you could get the panel to agree. :p :)) :)) =))

p.s H.H It was frantically searching ebay for a new stainless exhaust for my MR2 Mk1 which fell off today at the tender age of 22. :-o

Nickolas, Thems not Tits on the caption photo, they Sir, are the shattered remnants of a once proud body ! :(( :((

OMG don't let me near her - I've been known to rip the covering off a completed model and start again from scratch as it wasn't 'quite' right :ymblushing: Yes it would have flown - and yes no one would see it in the air - but I would have known ~x( I spend literally hours with brushes of 3 or 4 hairs painting tiny details that no one would ever see ... I've even painted with a single hair brush :-o :-o
Masking tape 'bleed' drives me mad .. I have so many different types of tape for different jobs you wouldn't believe... any slight 'bleed' means all paint off and start again X( Its an affliction I know - but there you go its ME and I am happy fettling as long as I get it right. :D :p

BTW I saw a programme on Sky about the factory where they build Rolls Royces now...did you know there is one bloke whose sole job is to HAND paint FREE HAND[no masking :-o ] every coachline on every car :-o :-o Apparently he's the only bloke who can do it ...what a skill :D

NNNnnoooo I could never do that..... Rolls Royce would never sell any cars if I had a go - I'd be constantly cleaning it off and having another go till I got it right in my eyes :ymdevil:

I love detail - but there's limits :D :p

You're probably right Mr. Tim. They will give someone a paintbrush and paint, then drive the cars passed him.

Who really cares about the colour matching ?

558 is a grand old lady - whos' paint has been weathered by time. Needless to say that newly painted/repaired areas will not match her weathered look - despite them being the correct coloured paints.

I call it 'limited battle damage' ;)

Nice pic SF.

Anybody know why the paint is a different colour just outboard of the engines? I assume that's where the fuel tanks are.
