:)

i imagine then Mackrick that you're referring to the loading 'prop' at the rear? doesn't it prevent the nose lifting of the ground during loading (until loading/fuelling is complete and properly balanced)?

Well its really a case of nobody really knows. There is plenty of debate around all the forums as to its use.
The RAF don't have it and most other airlines didn't either. It only appears in photos from african countries. The general opinion seems to be that it was for the use of loading heavy items into the rear freight bay. It appears that this was more a case of keeping the insurance companies happy. ALthough it does make sense as a tail steady during any phase of loading / unloading the aircraft, and refueling. The practicality of using it is in question though, continually adjusting its height during refuels etc. In the time that it takes to turn the aircraft round it would not be worthwhile using.

:-o

I'll have you know that I've never done anything over a Navy pilot! =))

as for the tail prop though - it looks somewhat flimsy to me,especially when compared to the mammoth props used when loading cargo aircraft!

even so, and assuming that it is man enough to support a tail-heavy VC10, what a shame they weren't in regular use at Brize when de-fuelling a certain Ten :(

Our ten wasn't the first to end up like that either, I have some photos somewhere of an EA VC10 in the same state.

mock ye not RLN - Mayfly's having LESSONS :((

oh and EAA was East African Airlines - for whom the very last VC10s were built - five Supers with cargo doors. when EAA folded, BAe reposed the remaining four (one had crashed) and they were converted at Filton to become RAF K3s :D
