RAF Broadwell

[Cluny]

A very brief History first .

Opened 15th November 1943 as part of 46 Group [Transport Command] , Broadwell was home to 512 Sqn and 575 Sqn C-47 Dakotas and Horsa Gliders . Aircraft from here took part in the Normandy Landings and Arnhem . On 6th August 1945 the Squadrons left for RAF Holme-on-Spalding Moor with the airfield eventually closing on the 31st March 1947 .





























Whilst wandering around , I found this built into the peri track .
Looks like a Royal Observer Corps shelter to me .

Yes an ROC post - looks like a well preserved one - I've been in several of those in the past when my father who was in charge of a cluster of 8 posts in Essex used to take me with him on his evenings out to the regular post meetings in the 60's and early '70s , I often used to drive as I was learning at the time and it was an opportunity to get a bit of experience. Sadly my father died last week but a couple of years ago were were out near finchingfield and he remembered that one of his posts was close to the road there (just west of Wethersfield) and sure enough we saw it a minute or two later! - he still loved reminiscing about ROC and his time in the RAF right up until the last 2 or 3 months of his life.

Very interested in those ROC sites,There is one at KNOCKHOLT that is apparently in good condition and I believe is occasionally open to the public !
