655 Avionics Update

Postby WaddoVet » Mon Oct 18, 2010 11:28 pm

All being well we will soon have a fully functioning NBS(Navigational Bombing System). The only other functional NBS system we know of is in a living room in Holland!

From an almost totally dead system we now have a functional H2S Ground Mapping Radar, and a nearly functional NBS, having replaced some of the Frequency Changer system, although only one of the two Frequency Changers is yet functional. Still working on getting No.2 working.

Still on the 'to-do' list is the HRS, MFS (semi-functional at present) GPI and Auto Pilot, but with a bit of luck we will manage to get those systems functioning as well.

We should not only say thanks to Len for all the work, but also a VERY BIG thanks to the guys at Hinkley, who have provided lots of technical manuals (APs) and no small amount of system hardware, which is of no use to 558 but is of great assistance to us.

And they've done all that despite the problems hanging over their own heads. :ymapplause: :ymapplause:

Many thanks, guys. We hope everything works out ok for you.

a bit of a silly question but what use is a working ground radar and nav bomb kit? is it not dangerous to use on the ground?

Not a silly question at all, and in terms of taxying XM655 it is no use at all - we can (usually) find the runway without it. ;)

We have to be careful about its use, especially in terms of actually putting power on to the transmitter, but our intent is to preserve the aircraft with as many of the original systems working as possible. Otherwise, it would be little more than a 1:1 airfix model.

If you think the radar is scary, wait till we "accidently" turn on the ECM, and shut down all broadcasting within a large radius. :ymdevil: :)) :))
