What no Vulcans.

Postby Crew chief » Thu Feb 04, 2010 3:40 pm

Hi all.

At this moment in time there are No fully serviceable Vulcans on the planet. :(
XL 426 is in bits due to her return to power.
XM655 has an engine out.
XH558 in the hangar in bits as well.

Just a thought.

And when and IF 558 is made airworthy, we will have the ONE and ONLY FULLY serviceable Vulcan! Till then, we will have to do without.

An aircraft doesn't have to fly to be FULLY serviceable you know.

Even when 558 is airworthy again, it will only be the bits CAA allowed to remain fitted which are serviceable. 426 and 655 are both better representations of a "real" Vulcan than the sadly emasculated 558.

Yes, of course I'm biased. Just look at my username. :p

I think the sight of 558 airborne is absolutely awesome, and I sincerely hope she will soon be flying again. But it is a fact that she is now far from complete as a representation of the type. As an example, the "office" of the Nav Radar and Nav Plotter is now plain matt black aluminium sheet. None of the equipment is installed. To some extent the same applies to the Pilot's and Co-pilot's panels. A large amount of wiring for this equipment has also been stripped out, so even if/when the equipment is refitted at the end of her flying career, it will still be impossible to actually power it up.

The objective of 655MAps (and I believe the same applies to 426) is to keep as much of the original equipment as possible in serviceable condition, even if it cannot actually be used in anger because we have to accept that the aircraft will never fly again.

I'm not knocking 558, just pointing out that different groups (and their aircraft) preserve different parts of the heritage.

Yes I quite take your point(s), I wonder if all the bits were kept to allow herto be returned to her RAF condition?

As alot went on to ebay or dumped in to large skips , I dont think so .
Well not in a functional condition unless they [TVOC or any museum that takes her on] plan to do a full restoration job on her again ;)

Afaik all the removed equipment has been kept for eventual re-installation. The stuff which was sold on ebay (and also given to other Vulcan groups :) ) was from the tons of spares which were originally supplied with 558.

Afaik it is feasible to put it back in, but not to get any of it working again (unless someone wants to find the money to put back all the wiring).

Does XM655 moving forward approximately 12" (to relieve the flat spots on the tyres) this Saturday count as the most nearly serviceable of the three?? :p

Also, if our Electrickery Genius can completely isolate the No 4 alternator wiring, we should be able to apply electrical power to the aircraft and exercise the PFCs, airbrakes and maybe the Rover as well, whilst Sooty and Sweep (sorry, I mean Bovril B-) ) carry on dismantling the compressor casings of No 4 \:D/

Sooty655, I think you have got your wires crossed somewhere. The CAA would have allowed 558 to fly with all the original kit in but it had to be completely serviceable. With the demise of Sealand, where they fixed most of the Nav Bombing System kit, and a lot of the OEM’s having gone out of business, there was no organisations left to certify the equipment; therefore, it was removed. All the equipment and panels removed have been stored – not skipped – and will be refitted at the end of her flying life. However, as you say, they will not be operable as we removed the wiring (why keep it if the kit’s not fitted? – extra weight).
Hopefully, when the Avionics kit gets to you next week from Hinckley, you will be able to get all the major Nav Inst kit on 655 working and, hopefully, the H2S / NBS, which would be a real sight to see again.

If you need any help with the Avionics, there is the possibility that I may be free as from the end of February.
