ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC!

superb Bovril - at last! any idea what the "fault" was that rendered it u/s as an engine? jumping the gun A LOT here, but if one of your existing engines develops a fault, could this 'new' one be used as a replacement?

this is a knackered one, but it will allow us to take a look at a few things, check our stands and then probably become a display item

Olympus 301 ex-XM603

Postby Sooty655 » Thu Aug 27, 2009 7:42 pm

The engine was found to be seized after being unused in XM603 for some time. The specific fault is not known, but from a very brief inspection I suspect it is in the main LP rotor system rather than in the auxilliary bits, so in the absence of a major overhaul it is probably terminal. :((

However, we have major plans for the engine. We need to inspect our existing engines (or at least a sample) to satisfy "elf'n'safety" we have a safe aircraft, and the inspection procedures will be developed and rehearsed using the ex-603 engine. This will ensure we know exactly what we need in terms of tools, equipment and consumables, so that when we drop one of XM655's engines we will be able to do the work and re-install it in a short timescale. The ex-603 engine will also be a possible source of spares if any are needed.

Eventually, we hope to turn the engine into a display item, so I can push interested heads inside to look for themselves, instead of having to answer their questions.

None of this would be possible without the generosity of the XM603 Club, to whom we are very grateful. :ymapplause:

XM655 has four of them, all serviceable.

well it's still excellent news, however terminal the engine's problems are.

does the 603 Club still actually exist then? i thought they had fizzled out after BAe's less than helpfully assistance in recent years :(

'558 arrived at 500ft AGL and seemed at times to be in the '655 cockpit with us :ymapplause:
