XM 655 hanger ?

Postby Ray C » Tue Apr 03, 2012 9:40 pm

looking @ the pictures of 655 tel's me she's loved & a credit to her volenteers/owners, what a difference to 603 when I looked at her from the perimeter fence yesterday, ok she will not get "cut up & crushed" but after the clean up & paint job I suspect that's it ! she will be outside at the mercy of Manchester weather .

Have the 655 group looked into a hanger facility ? what would you be looking at £300-400 grand a lot yes but a fund
raising campaign could get the ball rolling, I bet the team and plane would appreciate being undercover.

I look forward to seeing her this June when I trundle down for the day in my old car.
buy the way what does it cost to fill a Vulcan these days ?

A hangar would be nice, but apart from the massive cost there are also issues with planning permission and suchlike obstacles. Also, if 655 was in a hangar, we would lose all the visitors who spot the plane as they drive past the airfield and drop in to see us. Losing those visitors would lose us a lot of our income.

I hate to think what it would take to "fill up" a Vulcan these days. We put in our Spring "top-up" about ten days ago to take us from the weight-forward winter configuration up to a level to go into our summer activities, and the fuel bill was over £3000 (and that is after the very good discount we get from our airfield supplier).

XM655 has four of them, all serviceable.

err.. not really.. think about the folks you lose not seeing the vulcan in terrible weather whereas if she was in a hangar, plenty of signage advertising and having her poking out of said hangar would be enough.. Would really cut down on weather related issues and give a covered place for the visitors to come and see her and have a cuppa in a naffi all funding going towards her upkeep.

About £40,000 based on Jet A-1 at commercial rates (slightly different for AVTUR at military rates)....

Our weather in Warwickshire is very kind to us and the aircraft - we don't have Canadian winters! What we do have is a very large magnesium alloy shelter to work under. Our volunteers love it and so do our visitors. I can only think of two Saturdays in the last seven years where bad weather stopped play!

As Sooty says a hangar isn't going to happen for many reasons - and we're more than happy with that.

We don't need a 'NAAFI' either when we have the famous Touchdown Cafe at the other end of the airfield.....

And Ray - you'll be welcome to visit the cockpit for a cash donation on any Saturday, but not unfortunately on 16/17 June....

another problem is where a hanger would have to be.. access would be more difficult for visitors.. a hangar cannot go where we are now..
