Exercise Brize TAC 11th March and C130s arrive in July.

I heard from a reliable source a date somewhat earlier than that..

26 end is now a no go spotting wise , found this pic of the new fence on fighter control ~x(
Image
Lew Hill is going to be popular this year [well , untill an AN124 decides to do a 4 minute full power warm up again :)) ] :(

Edit
Apparently they are putting a similar fence up at the 08 end too X(
RIP spotting at Brize :((
I shall have a drive past next weekend to inspect it personally .

Cluny this photo is deceiving. The new inner fence only interferes with landing shots if you are directly behind the aircraft as it touches down. Approach shots are no problem as are shots from adjacent to the runway ie the fence does not extend as far as the old conc and chain link fence near the Crash Gate.

To me it has made no difference as I don't like to stand directly underneath a landing aircraft anyway.. :-o

Parking at #26 end is still possible if you park behind the double yellows above the old contractor's gate.

As far as I can see nothing has changed.

Been spotting there since 1982 and I have never been asked to move...

Just be sensible....

Anyone know the reason?

Stop spotters - old fence worn out - incoming Hercs??

Repats????????

Would make sense to restrict photo opportunities under these circumstances.

I heard from someone on camp that it was the Herc pilots who had asked for it.

Being the short arse I am it was tricky me getting many runway shots last time without scuffing my lens on the fences trying to poke it through, so for me nothing changes :p
From what I've read, the fence is still the same height they've just put another one infront of the original, so Cluny shouldn't have any problems as he can see clearly over it (Can I sit on your shoulders if you're free loading for the families day this year :p ) ;)

I can't see the point of this fence. If you look at the first photo below it appears solid but only the middle third forms a screen that Cluny will still see over, unless moved on by MODPlod etc. The rest is just a frame. This photo was taken last week.

So was this, through both fences.

This TriStar was taken in 1988 before ANY fence!! Notice the camp road across the threshold has not been finished either.

Dont know why , Brize used to be where all Repats took place .
Repat flights only moved to Lyneham in 06/07 .

The fence is no big deal, i saw it today and it doesn't look like it would cause any problems. :)

Went today later on for an hour - it aint good - fence runs all the way from each set of wire adjacent to crash gates and is solid. Virtually impossible to get any decent video shots of departures. Arrivals unaffected. Fraid its a change for the worst from a photographers perspective.

They can't have finished it while I was there then .. :( So we lose shots of a/c taxying out but still have arrivals/missed approaches. I'd rather catch them in the air anyway.

I peered through a gap in the fence for touchdown/takeoff shots today, worked fine!

That'll be the seat with no legroom then!

Do you think that there might have been a distraction issue to landing pilots when they see loads of people standing ahead of them?
If they undershoot and go in then there is going to be an unholy mess to scrape up.
From their view point I can understand why they requested the fence.
Standing under the approach is probably quite spectacular but I imagine if there is a big crowd there if something goes wrong there will be issues getting out of the way.

Whilst it is not a good for the photographers and spotters it IS good for those landing A/c.
Safety wins.

If you look at the go round at Yeovilton when 558 was there a couple of years ago, to me it looked like an undershoot. Too low too far out. (PURELY MY OPINION). If such an event happens (see above comments) there will be huge great earth bunds appearing around every airfield in the land. (Go to Stansted to see exactly what I mean).
