If anyone has the 2 disc version of The Battle of Britain dvd, you'll know that in the accompanying documentary 70% of the Americans interviewed outside of their London embassy either didn't know what the Battle of Britain was, or thought the US had stepped in to "save" us... :ymsigh:

I had to think about this for a while before
making a reply.......

I think the newspaper is to blame for calling-up
all the emotions here, just like Clarkson does
when he routinely trashes America -- because it
gets the knee-jerk reaction.

I personally believe that there's PLENTY of credit
to go around for winning the Battle of Europe.
Battle of BRITAIN, though, all happened before we
got there.

During those perilous days, though, you have to admit
that we were sending you a HUGE raft of STUFF and all
on CREDIT! "WE" didn't "WIN" that battle, but we by God
helped you do it!

It was only later that the word "WE" assumed a different and
more important and more lasting definition.

SHAME ON THE DAILY MAIL!!!!!!!! Especially now, we don't
need all the negative. YOU know who your friends are, and
EYE am ONE of them!!!!!!!!

as much as it pains me Danf, i can't help but agree with you - even so, in my limited experience i have yet to find a Murkin quite as well-versed as you in historical matters!

i don't think anyone in the UK would ever dare suggest that Murkin-land did bugger-all for us prior to the Pearl Harbor attacks - the USN had been escorting trans-pond convoys since day one - effectively putting themselves at war with Germany!

that's NOT to say however that the Murkins did ALL the hard work! it really was a two-way street; a good example being the Arctic convoys (again, mainly US ships and escorts) - the ever-present threat of the Bismark soon put an end to those, and Churchill was only too aware that he desperately needed to deal with Bismark before the Murkins would continue sending tons of shipping by that route ever again!

so, we couldn't have survived without the Yanks, but they couldn't do their bit until we had done ours - Even Stevens in my opinion!

the whole of Britain's forces relied HEAVILY on US equipment - guns, tanks, aircraft, shipping, food - the list goes on!

having said all that, it does appear at times that many Murkins forget just how long we fought Hitler without their direct involvement. even after the US entered the war, the vast majority of intelligence was gathered by Brits, or other nationals TRAINED by the Brits - SOE, Station X etc etc. we dropped far more bombs on Germany too, with many of our aircrew doing vastly more sorties than the magic 25 of the Murkins.

don't forget also that our RN was still the most powerful afloat too - and many Murkin operations relied on our Naval might.

should Murkins have more appreciation for the BoB? quite simply, YES! had it not been for the RAF delaying the Krauts' planned Operation Sealion (the invasion of Britain) then the Murkins would have had no European base from which they could operate; Britain was the ONLY unoccupied place that they could be "over-sexed, over-paid and over 'ere" and get on with the business of defeating both Hitler and Mussolini :p

i wonder how many of our British 'blokes in the street' would be able to tell you all about the Battle of Midway - the Murkins' "finest hour"?

Sorry, my computer is doing weird s**t......

The IMPORTANT thing is that we all got through it
TOGETHER. Too many people died. Assigning either
credit or blame is useless now. I could quibble about
bomb tonnage with you, but I won't -- because it's no
longer important.

The important thing is that our countries are bound
together at the wrist and ankles in many ways.

I know, I know... you love to hate us and hate to love
us but there it is.....

Not unlike a very old marriage where the spouses THRIVE
on a little conflict and remember important events differently
at times....

Was Winnie's Mother's Origin just an accident do you think?

EYE don't!!!!!!!

I believe the knee jerk reaction of the great British public is one of disgust at these sort of 'articles'.

I frequently discuss this with the good lady wife and I personally believe the blame lies firmly with the 'media' and certain individuals who are mis-informed.

After all, it was a 'World' war ... everyone 'played' their part and at the cost of so many awfully brave souls.
