Canberra Man wrote:Hi.
In 1942, I did some real spotting. I lived in Grimsby, Lincs and Grimsby had a huge dock and railway system. The docks board organised a spotting system, High points round Grimsby had spotting post's and spotters (My father was one of them) and I used to visit him and look through his huge binoculars. He pointed out a cloud formation and told me where to look and I was looking at a Junkers 88, then the ack ack opened up and he handed me a spare steel helmet, I did feel grown up!! That was happy days. Grimsby was also a test bed for the German anti- personell butterfly bombs. They were killers, children mostly. When I was 18, I was called up in the Royal Artillery ack ack and three months after demob a had joined the RAF and ended up on 617 Squadron at RAF Binbrook, 12 miles from home!!
