At present our boat is moored on the River Brent (Grand Union Canal) close to a railway bridge between Brentford and Syon Lane stations. I'm no railway expert but the line appears to run from Waterloo to Staines and on to the West.

We hear commuter trains all the time, but I'm sure that yesterday (Wednesday) morning around 9 o'clock I heard a steam train go past. I wasn't quick enough to see it, so no idea which direction.

Anyone got any idea what it might have been?

You were correct. It was a steam locomotive.
