The harrier is famous because is the really operationnal Vtol plane (the yak is just one joke). It s practice for the navy because it s can transform a helicopter carrier in a small aircraft Carrier (but it s impossibel to compar at one really nuclear aircraft carrier), but you have sale all your aircraft carrier.
And is stupid to use a vtol in land, because he have small range (in vertical take-off, a AV-8 can carrie only 3000kg of fuel and weapon, to compare a rafale can carrie 9000kg of weapon in addition to 4500kg of intern fuel and the gun) it s obligatery use near to the battle front and you can t use cargo plane for supply your base (you havent runway) and it s to much dangerous for the helicopter (and it s nessecary to use to many rotation). your only solution is to use the truck, but it s nessecary to use a very big convoy and make problem because he use the same road to the supply of ground force and a small number of airstrik or commando opération can destroy your air capacity.
Personnaly i prefere the russian technic. They use the mig29, su27 or su25 in the field or road and use the all terrain cargo plane for thé supply
