Typhoon v The Mig 29 or SU 37

Copied from T'other side.

Just for fun..

Given a hyperthetical dogfight situation - which would come off the better. Tiffie or the Ruskie ?

tough one, but ultimately i think the Typhoon might just gave it - not so much the a/c but the pilot! ;)

This all raises a much larger issue, though.....

Given the nature of modern air combat where
the opposing aircraft are miles apart and not
likely to actually "see" one-another, what kinds
of performance become more important? How
likely/unlikely is it for two fighter aircraft to
actually engage in the old one-on-one dogfight?
Is it possible that INVISIBILITY has become the
paramount thing along with the best electronics?

D4th

Yours is an often held view of so called modern air combat, BUT;

No pilot worth his salt would release a weapon at an unidentified target, he must close to actually and positively identify the target. This was the limiting factor with the AGM 54 Phoenix AAM that equiped the wonderful F14 Tomcat. Although it had in excess of 100 miles useful range, the launch aircraft had to be much closer than that to make a good call. The posibility of beyond visual range, fire and forget AAMs is all available, the kit exists, but the target MUST be positively identified. The F4 Phantom had a TISEO in the leading edge of the Starboard wing which allowed full use of the Sparrow AAM, if on a good clear day that might just allow 30 to 40 miles.

Looking forward to further discussion

DXP:

Well, I really don't hold any hard-and-fast views on
this subject. I just know that things continue to
become more and more complicated every day.
It seems to be a lot more than just which aircraft
out-performs the other subjectively. Electronics,
armament, stealth and flexibility all need to be
factored-in as well, and I think it's really risky for
anyone to pick winners and losers in this contest --
if there even IS one, really.

Good point about "stand-off" warfare, although I
believe elctronics have come a long way since the
Tomcat. Do not know what the ID limits are these
days. Also don't know as much as I ought to about
the Ivans and Yuris out there. Of course, THEY tend
to OVERSTATE their performance figures.

One final thing, I would like to say I am profoundly
impressed by the Typhoon -- just so you don't think
I'm a drum-banger for the F-35 family. Hell, some of
those "Phoons" have flown right over my house! Do
you think they COMPLIMENT the F-35 as in horses
for courses? And where do you place the Raptor in all
of this? This is a very fertile subject, don't you think?

Oh, and does your shiny new avitar suggest that you
are a CITROEN FAN??????????....or maybe OWNER?????
