Reds clear to fly

Postby Lucas1860 » Thu Aug 25, 2011 12:43 pm

Sky news just announced that the Red Arrows are clear to fly. No doubt will be a sad return.

Some good news from this sorry episode, I presume they have identified the cause and wonder when it will be published?

Yes, I assume that they have found something (or not) that indicates not a fault with Hawks.

That's good news but, as you say, it will be tinged with a lot of sadness.

Presumably a period of practising required.
And if they feel like displaying, how long before they are back to scratch. Only a few weeks of season left.

It's more of a case of Hawk T1s being cleared to fly rather than the red Arrows specifically. I shouldn't think they will display again this year.
I think it is more of a RAF requirement for training to get the Hawks back in the air rather than anything else.

Taken direct from the RAFAT website:-

In the absence of any critical safety recommendations in the Service Inquiry’s initial report the precautionary suspension of Hawk T1 flying activity has been lifted and flying operations have been resumed. The Red Arrows aircraft will fly back to RAF Scampton tomorrow (Friday 26 August 2011). In preparation for the resumption of public displays the Red Arrows will begin flying eight ship formation display practices starting on 30 August 2011. Display flying by the Red Arrows team, in an eight ship formation, will recommence subject to a successful period of consolidation and approval to display. As part of their display season preparation the Red Arrows practice displays with eight aircraft so that a display can go ahead if a pilot is unable to fly

We emailed [well DT did] his condolences as he's fairly close to them because of Waddington airshow, the reply he got was they will be back for the remaining season if at all possible and that was before the grounding was lifted. They are very professional in the their approach and I'm sure they would see it as letting Jon down if they made the choice not to fly. As for the training don't they generally have 2 weeks down time at the beginning of August anyway? and they do fly with 8 when one one the is unfit.

Just made it in time to see the Red Arrows depart bournemouth. bit of a teary eyed farewell to say the least :( . First group departed as a 3, then 2, then 3, and finally the spare aircraft as a 2 ship (one in red, other in black). They finally went out of sight at about 12:30. I took some pics as they left. I anyone wants to see them, i'll post later once I'm home.

I assume so. Each group took off about 2 mins apart and immediately headed north.

Very nice tribute by Ben Murphy Red1 on the Reds site...

"It is with great sadness that the Red Arrows return home to RAF Scampton without our teammate Red 4, Flt Lt Jon Egging. The pain and shock of losing Jon is still very real, and very raw, and all of our thoughts and prayers are with Jon’s wife Emma and with his family.

Whilst we are feeling a very personal grief, the public response to Jon's tragic death has been overwhelming and humbling and I would like to thank all those who have paid tribute to Jon by sending flowers, cards and letters and be assured that these have been of great comfort to Jon’s family and to us. In particular, I would like to thank the people of Bournemouth and Lincolnshire and, especially, the Dorset emergency services who have all shown great compassion and sensitivity.

Jon, as a Red Arrows pilot, encapsulated everything that is the 'Best of British'; he was an exceptional pilot, a dedicated RAF Officer who saw service for his country but, moreover, he was a selfless and compassionate friend who will be sorely missed. The fortitude, resilience and pride that Jon showed in life are exactly the qualities that define our Armed Forces and it is these that will enable us to get back on our feet and move on. For that reason, and in Jon's memory, the Red Arrows will be displaying to the public again at the earliest possible opportunity."

Thank You, Your Ladyship, that really
touched me......

A very well-spoken tribute from one
that knew and loved him.

You Brits are so good at expressing
emotions in just the right way......

I hope they find an appropriate way
to remember this fine young man, and
I'm sure they will!
