Lots of the usual journalistic license there.

Birds that size aren't likely to do significant damage, even in quantity, other than mess up the paintwork.

And they compare it to.....

Last year a U.S. Airways Airbus struck a flock of birds just 10 minutes after takeoff, causing both engines to fail.
The cool-headed pilot famously carried out an emergency landing on the Hudson River saving all 150 passengers on board.

Only one small difference - US Airways 1549 hit a flock of Canada Geese

Excellent comments on the article. Especially on the shadows. Notice the shadow of the birds is no where near the shadow of the aircraft. Me thinks the birds were nearer the camera than the aircraft
