21 Spitfires at Duxford

Postby Spitfire » Thu Dec 11, 2008 11:18 pm

You'll all soon be sick of me and my Spitfires :ymblushing:

A few years back at Duxford they wanted to recreate one of Baders 'Big Wings' and they got 21 Spitfires airborne together (would have been 22 but 1 went US!) - I was lucky enough to be there and wondered if anyone else saw it?

An amazing sight and sound - after the big join up they came by in groups of 3 and 4 and just kept on coming and coming - low and fast - brilliant :D

Well I did take some photos but they are a bit of a waste of time - the big wing formed up behind the crowd line then flew over us from back to front - they flew in finger four groups quite widely spaced and fairly high. Subsequently to get them all in the photo I took has 21 Spitfire shaped silouhette like blobs :( When they were flying by in groups I was so emotional I didn't take any at all :ymblushing:

The photos are buried somewhere in the family photo box up in the loft - it was before I could afford digital so it was on a Pentax ME SLR on 35mm film :p

When we got there they were all lined up in single file nose facing the crowd - Spitfires as far as you could see left and right \:D/

I recall that too, wasn't it something like 17/18 airbourne ? I have some 35mm photos in the loft somewhere but will take ages to find them.

I'd have to ask him Dan and if he does have any I'll see if I can get them scanned.

Dan, I asked my father whether he had taken any photos and the reply was that the people working on the aircraft were not allowed to take photos :( Seems odd but then from what I've read about Mr Arnold he was a funny chap at times.

=)) not 'funny' as in jokey but 'funny' as in he didn't like people showing interest in his aircraft. There's a thread on the Pprune forum which might give you more of an insight.
