I don't think it is, but, on a HD monitor with a flippin expensive graphics card, there's something about that pic that looks fake.

I'm pretty certain it's not because the shadows are right, I dunno, it just looks fake on my screen :-?

On a bog standard laptop I have to say it looks fake too - almost photoshopped - it just isn't ... right :(

Can't explain it - it's just too perfect .... unless its just a bloody good lucky photo :D

Looking at the MFI trailers in the background and comparing them to the position of the same trailers in the first photo of the original sequence, it's possible that this picture was taken after the power was chopped and the pilot was about to land. This would also explain the absence of the smoke trails clearly evident from the Conways in the take-off pictures, but not this latest one.

Great picture, SM - nice find!

Thanks,

I've got the digital artist I use to have a look at it.

I'll have an answer and proof within a couple of days.

PS: at first glance, she thinks its fake

EDIT: No layers to separate. It's authentic

In which case, Cracking find SM!!

I'm no photography expert by any means, but i disagree with most of the comments above.

i can see what can only be jet efflux - the tops of some of the trees, and the blue lorry tractor units are slightly blurred, compared to the other trailers.

also, if the image of the Victor was superimposed, where might the photographer have got the image from in the first place? to take a picture showing the upper surface of the tail-plane would surely mean (if the Victor was on the ground at the time) that the photograph must've been taken from about 50ft up!

not convinced, sorry - i think it's genuine :p

sm

edit: it seems that the Victor pilot has 'publicly' described the whoopsie - read it for yourself here

i do like the line, "...and for a fraction of a second I considered going for full power, a climb and circuit..." :-o :ymapplause:

now THAT would've been something!

From cockpit comfort, to sophisticated aerodynamics that gave it a performance well ahead of the Tin whatsit thing....were the mega-millions well spent? Could we raise such a sum and capitalise on the Triangle experience?

Sooty655 wrote:The limiter is a double datum governor in the fuel pump driven by the LP compressor. The cruise setting limits LP speed to 96%. That would be somewhere around 15,000 lbs thrust.
The take off setting in service was set to 100%, which gave 18,000 lbs thrust, to match aircraft with 200 series engines and maximise engine life.
The absolute maximum for a 300, intended for use with Skybolt, was 104% which equated to 20,000 lbs thrust.

Sooty

PS all the above are from memory as I haven't got access to the library at the moment (I'm down to 4mph on a canal boat) so if you find different figures, don't shout too loud.

Sooty - you may not have your usual access to your library - but I do to mine! Take-off switch setting on the 301 is indeed 18,000 lbs, but that equates to a measly(!) 17,000 lbs on the 201. In the cruise setting, the 301 has a maximum thrust of 17,000 lbs and the 201 has 16,000 lbs. In addition to the take-off/cruise switch, there is also a JPT limiter which controls the engine speed below the selected governing speed, if necessary, so that the corresponding jet-pipe temperature limit is not exceeded.

Hey - have we got the whole MaPS Team on this forum now? :)

Thanks for the revised figures, RHV. Not too far off from memory, eh?

With the rev limiter set to 100%, I doubt if the JPT limiter would be reached on a 301 unless operating in high ambient temperatures.

I guess 18000 lbs thrust was as low as the 301 jockeys were prepared to go to save the 201/202s looking second hand - eat your heart out 558.

I'm not certain, but I think the Take off limiters were put back to 20000 lbs thrust for Black Buck.
Sooty

One Olympus 301 has twice the power of a complete F1 starting grid.
XM655 has four of them, all serviceable.

Indeed - they were uprated to 103% to give them the much quoted 20,000 lbs thrust for Black Buck. The 'usual' restriction for the 301s was 97.5%.

With the rev limiter set to 100%, I doubt if the JPT limiter would be reached on a 301 unless operating in high ambient temperatures.

Surprisingly, above 20,000 ft both datums could easily be exceeded, and the Aircrew Manual warns that in the take-off setting the JPT may have to be kept within limits by use of the throttles.

Not too far off from memory, eh?

Bristol trained 'em well..... ;)

See you on the 31st

someone has finally got around to posting a video of the Victor 'flight' \:D/

he has asked that it not be posted elsewhere, although he is happy for a link to his original post on the Fighter Control forum - of which you must be a registered member to view the content :)

linky: Fighter Control forum - Victor flight - it will prompt a login screen, where you can register

the Victor flight is right at the end of the 4:55 clip :)
