You're quite right, that is a LITTLE film of a Hawker Hunter!

Very nice, ever heard the BLUE NOTE?

Really good piece of film, I do like Hunters.
I wish the HHA would fly theirs more often :(
They scared the life out of us one day when we were parked in the carpark on the Lincoln edge just below Scampton :D came over us very low (well they had just taken off :))) , brilliant =))

Oh how I loved that sound, almost like the Vulcan howl. Lucky enough to have my first posting to Hunters in Jan 1965. Went everywhere in Europe and the Med in 2 years. Fabulous aircraft and bloody impressive when they cut loose the guns and rockets. :D

Am I correct in thinking that the Blue Note is only heard in certain weather conditions ?

I saw XE601 at Yeovilton in 2007 and the blue note was heard. Hot and sunny weather btw.

Have to say that the Hunter is one sexy looker too.

Try this one for size;

I can hear the Hunter's 'blue note' in my mind.
It takes me straight back to standing in the back garden of my parents house in Norfolk in the late sixties.
It always seems to be a Spring day, sunny with scudding clouds, slightly cold and this wonderful sound high up--seeming to fill the dome of the sky with sound.

Yes, the Meteor and particularly the F8 are though to be better at producing a BLUE NOTE from the airflow over the gun ports and ejection chutes at approximately 300 MPH in fine weather!

I think the Hunter is one of the planes that should be flown more often for the public. My Dad used to service Hunters at Hurn in the 80's (not sure who's) and every now and then, he would bring me home a little keepsake. All I have left is a pair of shells tucked away in a box somewhere. The other bits went missing when we moved house 18yrs ago :( .

I have never heard the blue note until now................Thanks Phill :) .

There is an increasing number (hoped to become nine) now being used for research! :ymapplause:

I presume you're referring to NASA acquiring a few more ex-Italian ones, XP? Nobody else sneaking a few under the radar?! :))

I guess NASA will have to do something with their pilots once the Shuttles are grounded... ;)

I know the owner of XE601, i've even sat in the cockpit, we (he) thinks she is the only flying hunter that still produces the blue note because she still has her guns fitted, we dont think any others do, we might be wrong though....

XE601 is truly a magnificent aircraft, and I have to say really suits the raspberry ripple colour scheme. :ymapplause:

Long may it continue flying. B-)

As for the F104 Widowmaker. Don't get me started on that pile of junk. X(

Only saw the light of day in Europe because Lockheed bribed the decision makers, and was totally unsuitable for the required purpose. Not to mention the loss of life....... ~x(

Dear Andrew;

I don't think you'll get very far calling
one of Kelly Johnson's babies ugly --
or any of his other children, either.

As with many magnificent aircraft of
those days, there were problems, and
it is very easy to concentrate on that.
I think if you can manage to get past
the propaganda and educate yourself
with facts, it will become clear just
what a milestone the Starfighter was
and is.

I'm afraid you are out of sync with the
consensus of opinion on the F-104.
Look around a little bit and you might
have a change of heart.

Or even an epiphany!

Dear Danny,

I don't recall calling one of Kelly Johnsons 'babies' ugly did I? Nope, didn't think so.

As for propaganda, the Lockheed bribery case is FACT (in that it happened) and what a sad sorry state of affairs that was.
Buying an aircraft that even the Americans didn't want at the time, and one as dangerous and unsuitable as the F104 Widowmaker, just goes to show how far some people will go to make a fast buck for themselves. X(

I really don't care about 'being out of sync' with the consensus of opinion of the F104. I'm my own man and make my own mind up without feeling any kind of need to toe the party line. If that upsets you then sorry, but that's the way it is.

In summary, I STILL DON'T LIKE THE F104! =))

Now let's get back to the HUNTER! :X

Dear Andrew;

1) Bribery and under-the-table deals
were the way things happened back
then -- even in the British aircraft
industry. Lockheed simply got caught.
Many others didn't or only burnt their
fingers.

2) USAF couldn't make up their mind
about the Starfighter because it was
so different (small, light) and they
kept moving the goal posts.

3) Cutting-edge aircraft are always
subject to teething problems -- just
look at your Lightning which is now
worshipped by many.

4) The people who flew, maintained
and operated the Starfighter do not
share your opinion.

5) There are only two people in the
world who are allowed to call me Danny,
and you're not one of them.

6) I am not upset.

7) The F-104 Starfighter does NOT sit
on the Board of the VTS Club! :p
