RAF Harrington [pic heavy]

Postby Cluny » Sun Nov 10, 2013 12:41 pm

Opened in spring 1944 , RAF Harrington was the haunt of the USAAF Special Operations Group "The Carpetbaggers" [801st Bomb Group , later renamed 492nd Bomb Group] for the delivery and supply of SOE Agents in to Occupied Europe . Aircraft based here were B-24 Liberators , A-26 Invaders C-47 Skytrains and Mosquitoes . The airfield closed October 1945 and returned to farmland , until 1958 when the RAF selected the site for the basing of 3 x Thor IRBM's . They stayed untill 1963 and the airfield again returned to farmland [it was shortly after the Thor's were removed that the runways were taken up] .

Love the 'Old airfield' shots - thanks for posting
In memory of a very dear friend - Mike Pearson

Very fond memories of Robbie Gilvary - DTs 1st Vulcan Captain who taught DT all he knew.
