Definitely not aircraft electrics, unless he knows something I don't? They do have external florescent lights which light up the cockpit so, you could say they light up the gauges.

Most likely reason is beacause the 2 removed engines had low hours on them so it was worth at the time putting them back in the spares pile, the 2 remaining probably have the opposite story.
