Motorsport - General Discussion

Postby Jet Morgan » Sun Apr 29, 2012 9:40 pm

Sad news from a club event at Goodwood this weekend, as a driver named Sandra Harrison-Moore has been killed while driving a Caterham in a time-trial at the curcuit. Not many details at the moment, but the reports claim that she crashed into the tyre wall but still sustained fatal head injuries... :(

Sad BUT motorsport IS dangerous. You participate ENTIRELY at you own risk. That includes marshals and spectators.

Indeed, I used to be spectator safety marshal about fifteen years ago on rallies like the Network Q RAC. Accidents are accepted as a risk that you live with at all motorsport events, but accidents are still a tragedy and cause a lot of distress especially amongst spectators and marshals who don't have an armed forces/emergency service/railway type background...

Been lucky as a marshal and only had 2 fatals.
A guy who got thrown out of a historic at brands opposite the pit exit the got run over by a fellow competitor.

Jo Gartner at Lemans. Huge off at about 3am on the Mulsanne straight.
We were opposite Les Hunardiers on the straight and the balloon went up. we raced to the scene, put out the fire then looked around for the driver. No one sporting a 'hat' so we looked inside. There was poor Jo. Head between his legs.
The crash was as a result of not tightening the gearbox filler correctly at a pit-stop. The 'box spewed out the oil on the out lap, seized as he was coming out of Tert Rouge with the pedal hard down. Slewed across the track and struck the barrier with such force both the shoulder harness anchors failed. Car flipped and continued on it's roof for several hundred yards. There wasn't a panel on it when we got to it. We could only identify it as a 956 Porsche because of the exhaust pipe and waste gate pipes at the sides. We left it to the French Fire brigade to extract the body. Apparently there wasn't a mark on him except for some heat blistering on the palms of his hands where there is usually only 2 layers of Nomex on the gloves. His race suit (3 Layer Nomex) plus the Nomex underwear and balaclava all did their jobs perfectly.
