Hello,
Some of you may have caught a report on BBC TV News concerning the London Borough of Bromley's intention to demolish part of the Biggin Hill St George's RAF Chapel of Remembrance and replace it with an ugly square building which will become the long awaited Battle of Britain Museum. The plans for a mini 'Duxford' type building that would take large artifacts has been pushed aside, even though it would have cost probably less. The planned 'Box' it seems will only have photos, video displays and small items. The Vestry is to be demolished, it is a large (70 sq metres) 'Craftsmans' built brick building, elegantly housing the Air Crew Association stained glass window.
To view the BBC TV report please click on the following link to the Downe village website and scroll to the first item:

Hopefully you will want to join the 11,000 people who have signed to persuade the Council to think again. To access the PETITION please google Protect Biggin Hill RAF Chapel or just click on this link:

The proposed buidling looks awful, why can't they use the Officer Selection Building that's right next to the Chapel ?

Yes, I totally agree. The new building is hideous and totally unsympathetic with the character of the existing.

Well a short update on this story,as you all probably know the museum is up and running and looks as bad as I thought it would be ,I get to drive past it 2 or 3 times a week and it never fails to depress me ! I don't know if it's connected but the Officers and Aircrew selection building has been spruced up ( cosmetically at least ) for some reason( maybe they're going into the B & B business ;)
On a slightly different tact, there are still a whole load of buildings still slowly falling into a bad state ,I wonder what will become of them ? The police currently use some of the site as a dog training area !
