just watching "Nightwatch" on ITV - it's all about Waddington (gonna see if it's available for download ;) )

it contained a five minute 'bit' on RAF dog-handlers - quote of the week:

"They give me this dog to walk and to play with; basically they pay me to walk a dog - it's great!"

The BRAIN ON THE CHAIN element of the partnership always meant you would have something to talk to after being arrested by the RAF FUZZ! :-o

(I'm chatting on msn with Pujgnie right now and he mentioned being male and brain on a chain in the same sentence - and I just TOTALLY misunderstood what he meant! In my defence I hadn't seen this so he's pointed me in this direction!)

I am friendly.. just that my dogs were trained not to be. :D

Image

The above pic (borrowed ;) ) shows a trained dog in action. It was called 'the standstill leave'.

The 'criminal' starts off running away ignoring the doghandlers warnings..... once the dog has been released and is well into it's attack - the criminal suddenly stops still !!! The handler had to shout a command of 'stand still' to crim and a very loud 'Leave' to the dog - which by this time was virtually on it's target. The dog had to cease the attack and pass the criminal without taking a chunk out of him - :) then go into the down position facing the criminal.

It started off with full protective gear, but with continued training and confidence.... it could be done with complete trust in training of the dog, and no need for any protection at all. (As is pic shows).

Dedication, perseverance, practice and patience generally got a result.

:D

That's amazing how you get the dog to hang there like that with just a verbal command :-o :-o That is REAL training ;)

Not hanging... flying past airborne :D

Many dogs instinctively launched themselves during attack mode. Some took arms or hit knee. Arial and knee biters invariably brought criminal down due to weight and momentum of being hit. :D :D :D

And there was me thinking it was just hanging there - I thought that was clever ...... but flying past airborne - not nearly as impressive =)) =)) =))

Strange how the copper in the background has automatically adopted the same pose, surely that would confuse the dog if they all did it? :-o

LOL... but also notice T shirt says 'Volunteer'..... done so as to avoid any scent recognition from training... :D

This scenario looks like criminal was fleeing the vehicle after a heinious crime ;)

You and I are on the same page as far as
dogs are concerned.

Stoopid Q::::::::

As for me, I am petless and I've been so for
a while. I would LUV to have a four-legger of
the canine variety, but I get disgusted by all
of the people who get dogs and view them as
possessions or status symbols and then neglect
them. PISSES ME OFF!!!!!!!!!! and I won't make
that move until I KNOW I can do the animal justice.....

BUT! PHILL!!!!!!

Have you any four-leggers yourself?

I have owned several GSD's since leaving RAF... mostly stolen by the ex's in my life. (hey Ho)

My last committed Harri Kari - from devotion and thoughts that I had left her for good. I only dropped her off at a friends to have a week-end away :(

Back to your Q Dan.. A dog is for life - it is what you make it. Socialize it from puppyhood, once you have decided on a breed - gain as much info on it via internet and books BEFORE getting it.
