RAF Scampton

Postby Mayfly » Tue Jan 20, 2009 8:49 am

according to yesterdays 'Lincolnshire Echo' the future of Scampton is secure said the Government's Defence Secretary.

Mr Hutton said: "The RAF will continue to have a significant presence in Lincolnshire – and that applies to RAF Scampton.
"I can categorically state there are no plans to close the base."

So thats it then it's bound to close now :o) :p

If they paint the buildings and resurface the runway you know they'll sell it.

Is there a base hospital at Scampton?

Here in Maine, Dow AFB, Loring AFB and Brunswick
NAS all had major multi multi million dollar base
hospital expansions just prior to closing announcements.....

So then, it's:

RAF: Pavement.

USAF/USN: Hospitals.

Gotcha!

Binbrook, resurfaced the roads and pavements, then tried to sell it to the prison service - they didn't want it as it would have cost too much too bring the accommodation up to the standard required for prisoners!

Then they shut it.

yup - same with the British Army too - fleets of vehicles sent to base workshops for scheduled overhaul - then onto trucks destined for the disposal auctions! =))

Watch out if you see double glazing window fitters on Scampton, then it will definitely close :D
Of course, it would have a 'secure' future if it were a prison! :((

Politicians Speak: "There are no plans to close RAF Scampton"

Translation "I have not approved any plans to close RAF Scampton, yet."

Dream Ticket: Resurface runway, refit hangars, move in BBMF and other historic flights, fly in our lovely Vulcan and civilianise the whole support structure(civvies are cheaper). Lovely idea, bring it on, oh yes Lordy, Lordy I have a dream, bring it on! :D :D

Talking of Scampton, anyone fancy a guided tour around it? I went in the summer and got a talk about where bits of the Dambusters film were made, also saw the office of GG, where the raids were planned etc.

We had a great talkk by the bloke guiding us around too, told us all sorts of stories about it. We saw the grave of a certain dog, who's name I cannot mention for fear of being locked in the tower of london and beheaded.

We then had a loook in the hanger from where the Lancs left on the raid and also loads of really interesing stuff. It was free and brilliant. I am looking at arranging another trip if anyone wants to join me. Photos can be taken of certain areas as well, although depending on who does the tour, depends on the photos. Apparently some people have taken photos and then tried to sell them and upset one of the tour guides.

I know I am a total anorak, but as an avid fan of Lancs I was gobsmacked to be there.

I will post some pics of me being an anorak as soon as I find them.

Ok, how d I upload piccies then?
