Battle of Britain Day 2017

Today is 'Battle of Britain Day'.

Let us never forget those brave young RAF Airmen who defended this country during those darkest months of 1940 when, stretched to the limit (and beyond) they took on the might of the German Fighter Planes and Bombers. Many not returning; many returning but badly burned and injured.

We should also remember the ground crew who prepared the Spitfires and Hurricanes and patched them up as best they could, ready for the next sortie. They also came under fire during the German attacks on the Airfields.

Last, but by no means least, let us remember the brave women of the 'Air Transport Auxiliary' (ATA) who delivered the Aircraft to the Airfields, to replace those lost and/or to reinforce the Squadrons.

There was an 'unplanned' flypast by a Spitfire yesterday, over the 'Battle of Britain Memorial' at Capel-le-Ferne (near Folkestone, Kent) where the annual 'Battle of Britain Day' Ceremony was taking place:

This Memorial is The National Memorial to the Few and is 'Dedicated to the heroic and selfless deeds of the men who fought the Battle of Britain, 10 July to 31 October,1940.'

I have yet to visit this Memorial, but intend doing so, later this year; especially as a Bust of Sir Keith Park is there, that was unveiled to commemorate the 70th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain, in 2010:

Well worth a visit, although I didn't do the Scramble Experience on my visit.

Chose a fine day. It was shrouded in mist when I went!
