I don't think it was the first aircraft
with retractable undercarriage, but
certainly an early example......

That's Good, Martyn :D

Though I have to admit I've known
some women over the years who
were truly superlative drivers...

Competition-wise, they seem to be
especially suited for rallying and
autocrossing.....

Gosh, Pat, think of all the other twins
you're putting the Mosquito ahead of!

I like the Mossie, too, but ahead of
the DC-3/Dakota/C-47?????????

There are others, too, that bear mention.....

She's a superb achievement and an
amazing performer, but best ever?????

Without doubt D4th, :)
Arguably the original multi-role combat aircraft. Fly faster, fly higher, fly lower, fighter, night fighter, precision bomber, tank buster, train buster, ship buster hell everything buster, high altitude photo recce. Excelled at all of that and cost a fraction of any "all aluminum pursuit ship" anyone else made too!! And to top it all off a fabulous sound track and a beautiful shape to boot. And of course designed and built by a builder of other beautiful aircraft the immortal De Havilland. :D

But Jiggy, Pat said THIS:

the best twin engine prop aircraft ever

He never used the word "Combat", and I
took exception to the Mossie having the
title he first assigned it!

I will agree about the COMBAT aircraft
part of it, just not the all-encompassing
best twin-engine prop aircraft ever crown ;)

Do I make myself clear??????????

I certainly HOPE so :D

:)) :)) :)) :)) :)) No alibis allowed Yank :p

D 4th old bean I stand by my claim about the Mosquito and I realise you colonials like to think some of those clanky old radial twins from Douglas and Lockheed were good and so they were. :ymdevil:

But nothing could ever seriously equal, let alone beat the Mossie, she was a race horse among camels and is not just the best twin engine prop combat aircraft, but is also simply the Best Twin engine Prop aircraft ever. :D :D

Well, I suppose it all depends on what you
mean by "Best".......

I already agree about the Combat Aircraft
part, but when you look at the larger
picture, I think the DC-3 family was a true
breakthrough when introduced, had an
absolutely HUGE impact on the Second
World War, and had a worldwide influence
on air transportation which is impossible
to match (...or even calculate)...

I mean, just looking at the war, if you
were to go back and HAD to eliminate
one of the two aircraft from the equation,
which would you choose????????

Of course, I wouldn't want to get rid of
either one, but if you held a gun to my
head, I know what my choice would be...

Besides, a Dakota can carry FAR more
BEER than a Mossie :p
