How about a chat window like this https://blueimp.net/ajax/
There are plenty around and might just get used a bit as well.
Integration is fairly simple for phpbb as are most of the others..

I did have ajax installed on my first attempt at a forum, but it was pretty buggy :( Will check if there is a new version available for sure ;)

Not entirely sure if I was getting the wrong idea with the youtube function but it doesn't seem to work, however I have found this which might explain it http://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtopic.php?t=375183

Sorry if I've got the wrong end of the stick.

Its near enough what I have coded already - but a little more flexible. I did amend the "Hover over text" last night to make a little clearer, but also:

You can put either of the following between the youtube tags ....

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=w8CnlPf2_vU

or the whole embed code ...

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/w8CnlPf2_vU&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/w8CnlPf2_vU&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

Neither of these work for you IanM?

If I were being particularly critical I'd say that the BBcode is a bit limited, eg the following tags don't work:-

[br]
[img=right]http://www.tvoc.co.uk/images/vulcan-logo.gif[/img(=right)]

I was trying to right align pics and do line breaks in my footer as I have on the TVOC site, but it wouldn't play ball. Not that bothered though to be honest.

BBcodes are easy, just knowing what is required is hard. Will add them to the list :)

how about sub threads / topics ....
This will allow for a tidy layout ...
For example if you have a thread VC10 you can sub divide that into Military and Civvy

I would think then that it's far too easy to get lost within the different levels. The TVOC forum has that problem. Far too many sections and levels. Keep it simple :)

i agree with keeping it simple - one of the thing that irritates me about the TVOC forum is multiple postings on the same subject. whenever i post something that i think is a 'new' topic, i always search first to see if there is a similar one already which I've missed. of course, certain photographers feel that their pictures are far too good for an existing thread, and must be in a brand new thread! ;)

as far as the last post appearing at the top - i agree too - that's how it seems to work when using the 'recent posts' function.

I think make the latest topic posted in at the top of the topic list, that makes perfect sense but having the individual topics with the most recent first will make reading it difficult as if it turns out to be a long topic, anyone new will have to go to the bottom of the last page and read up.

Are you sure?? Got to the TVOC forum, find a long topic with multiple pages. Click on the first page and the first post will be the earliest. Click on the last page and the last post will be the latest.
