Smilies

Postby Gully » Tue Feb 24, 2009 7:42 pm

Anybody else having problems with the "View more smilies" link? When I click on it I get a new window full of smilies, whilst at he same time the forum / post page I was on also changes to a smilies sheet. I then can't select the smiley, have to close the new window and only way back to my post is to use the back button on the browser, which then gives me a blank new post page, having deleted my previously entered text!

Similar thing is happening with links to other sites: new window opens with the linked site, but IA disappears and becomes the linked site too. This was happening a while ago, but stopped. Appears to be back after the recent hiccup.

I'm using IE7.

Thanks,

Gully

no problem for me, although they do take a little while to load sometimes.

I'm sure our esteemed Wedgy can tighten a screw if need be :)

Nope - popup window opens okay with smilies in it, it's just that the IA page I was on then replicates them!

Sorry mate, there is nothing I can do this end :(

Pardon my French, but IE7 is a bitch X( At the end of last year I was having issues with any website in similar ways you are. I made doubly sure that these forums were 100% standard & current HTML - which they are.

All I can suggest is that you re-check your settings.

Anyone else add any advice for Gullys problems?

I use Opera which is faster than Firefox. Only use IE if I have to go on Microsoft's site.

Well, giving Safari a blast at the mo - see what smilies I can use...

=:) :ymalien: :ymparty:

Well, that seemed to work okay! Strange that it's only this site that gives me any problems: Wedgy's programming's too good for IE obviously!!

Thanks all,

UPDATE

After a very long time, this has now been officially logged as a 'bug' in the forum software - although the blame is not so much with them.
What a surprise, its only a bug with IE7 and IE8.

There is a quick & dirty solution, but I am unwilling to implement it - due to the fact it is 'dirty' and it causes code problems elsewhere.

There is a small solution:
Ensure the cursor is in the post body before you click the link. Once you have clicked on the 'View more similes' link - always ensure ALL the smilies have loaded before you select one.
I have tested this a lot this morning ... it works 9 out of 10 times :)

If you do not wait for the smilies to load, the smilie code will appear in the top of the more smilies window which you can copy/paste into your post (as shown below)
Image

Its also worth noting, that if you do not wait for the smilies to load .... then close the window and try again (waiting this time) it still will not work, unless you come out of the 'reply' screen and start again.

Sorry Wedgy still not working for me - tell me please, when you click on view more smilies do you lose your cursor in the reply box? I do & I wondered if thats the problem - I'm clicking to post a smiley but with no cursor it can't

The cursor does seem to disappear, but as long as it was there before you clicked the link - that should be fine.

Does it not even post the smilie code in the smilie window (as above)?

with me it's steadily got worse - started off just the odd one wouldn't post then have to try 3-4 times, then most wouldn't post, now non will, thought I had it sussed the other day by right clicking view more smileys & opening a new window but it only worked for a day or 2 and now I can't post any unless they are immediately on the left of the reply box............ :( ~x( [-x X( :((

oh well........

There maybe room for a few more on the front page to make things easier .....
If people post their favorites (that arnt on the front page) and their least favorites, I can move them around a little ;)
