New Members:::::::::::

Postby Dan4th » Sun Feb 28, 2010 12:14 am

I think that new members ought to be
required to at least provide some very
basic information. Perhaps it ought to
be just their location or at least SOMETHING
about themselves.

As it stands, we have people joining and
we know NOTHING about them. I can
understand not wanting to give-out stuff
that would allow for identity theft and all
that nonsense, but anonymity is a very
different thing from personal privacy.

I mean, people can LIE about it if they
want to, but why not require at least
some sort of a basic profile?

Do we really have to worry about driving
away potential forumeers that much?

Perhaps it's time to become just a little
bit more exclusive?

I really feel strongly about this!

I have thought something along the same lines myself - it all would be optional because as you say they could put anything, but the option would be there should they wish to tell us a little about themselves.....

I've also wondered if it would be a good idea [tho' not sure if it is possible], to make their first post a compulsory one in the new members section........I know I would prefer to say 'Hi I am'..... rather than dive straight into a thread.

It is not required..........

Something ought to be required.

I'm sure his Wedgyness can make sure that a first post can ONLY go in the new members thread.
Subsequent posts can be placed in any thread.

I'm not sure it's case they choose not too - I think its sometimes a case of not always seeing that option first off - I certainly don't want to cause Wedgy any more work -he already has enough to do

It can be done (since the latest upgrade) ... but the question is - do we want it done?

I know I am a member of a couple of forums and enjoy the lack of presure ....to just read and only post when appropriate. Only tell people somerthing about me if its relevant.

Ta for the concern MF ... have a PHP upgrade to do here next week. Will leave this thread to discuss further and will bookmark it to check back later.

I still think that even if it turns back
some over-cautious joiners we still
need people to provide SOMETHING
about who they are and why they're
joining. I mean, "Welcome Anonymous_1"
doesn't really do it, does it?

On a couple of other fora I belong to if you are logged in but haven't posted for a while there's a little window opens up or a ticker tape type banner that encourages you to do so - would that be an option!

Okay - I think I will leave all alone for now.

Its worth mentioning that the numbers of users that register then do not post has fallen by 80% over the last year. Mainly due to changes to who can view what if registered and also the "Newly registered members" group.

Add to that, all members with zero posts who registered but never returned have gradually been removed and we are almost down to minimal numbers now :)
