Tornado - BBC4 Thursday night

For anyone interested:

Absolutely Chuffed: The Men Who Built a Steam Engine Thursday 16 October
8:00pm - 8:30pm
BBC4
We Brits have found it hard to give up our love affair with steam trains. But why? Two films tonight explore this passion: one follows some chaps who built their own engine from scratch; while The Last Days of Steam at 9pm finds out why we didn't switch to diesel trains when everyone else did.

The whole In Steam season is very good viewing. The programme on before the Tornado one is a repeat of one I have on tape from 1986 and is great. The railway walks programme on afterwards is good too :)

It was a very good programme. Just one thing wrong with it - no, two things wrong. Too short and no 558

d'you think we should disconnect IanM from his electricity supplier? RLN can you install a switch marked "IanM - OFF"? :ymdevil:

clearly his dislike of steam disqualifies him from receiving electricity - 99.summat % of which is produced by steam! :D

ah, indeed- how remiss of me :(

it won't be long now before we can see a steam loco at 70mph on Britain's railways, for the first time in more than 40 years.

incidentally, there's an interesting programme on BBC1 West, for those who can get it:

BBC1 West, Sun Oct 26 2008 - 16:25
Travel journalist Simon Calder journeys from Portishead to Minehead to explore the legacy of the 1960s railway cuts in the West Country, arguing that the time has come to reverse some of Dr Beeching's branch line closures

:)
