Steam Locomotive 90mph Running on the Main Line

Postby 34053 » Mon May 13, 2013 4:48 pm

I have included this Post under another, rather 'general' Topic. However, as this is something really exceptional, I thought it worthwhile repeating here (in case you miss it!):

In addition to the plans already in place for the remaining six 'A4' Locomotives to be on display, around the turntable of the Great Hall at the NRM York there are other, 'action' activities in the final stages of planning, to celebrate 'Mallard 75':

How does an 'A4' travelling on the Main Line at up to 90mph grab you!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, believe it or not, Network Rail (and all the other parties involved) have done the checks and given the 'go ahead', subject to the outcome of a (night time) Trial Run.
- Then, all being well, the first of three runs will take place on June 29th, from London Kings Cross to York (and return, diesel hauled). Final pathings are yet to be decided/agreed, but there is the potential for 'up to 66 miles of high speed running'.
- The second run will be on July 19th, Diesel hauled: (joining stations) Bristol Temple Meads to York (and return); Steam hauled: York-Newcastle (and return), with 'up to 84 miles of high speed running'.
- The third (and final) run will be on July 27th, London Kings Cross-York, diesel hauled (and return, Steam hauled), with 'up to another 84 miles of high speed running'.

The Locomotive, for each of the runs, will be 4464 'Bittern'. The co-operation of all parties has been magnificent, with an encouraging 'can do' attitude on all sides. This will be a one off and covered by a 'Temporary Non-Compliance' (for one month) to overcome the maximum 75 mph speed limit on the Main line for Steam.

Do you want to be behind 'Bittern' on any/all of those days? The Promoter of the trains on June 29th and July 27th is 'Locomotive Services Ltd'; for the train on July 19th, the Promoter is 'Pathfinder Tours'.
However, ALL Bookings are through 'Pathfinder Tours':
Tel No 01453 835414 or 01453 834477

For convenience, here is the direct website link to each Tour:
- June 29th:

- July 19th:
http://www.pathfindertours.co.uk/index. ... steam.html

- July 27th:

Now's the time 'to be a part of History', if you can! Book your seat(s) now, to avoid disappointment.

90 mph 'Test Run' successfully completed :D

4464 'Bittern' achieved 91.5 mph in the early hours of Wednesday 29th May, at Burnham, on the 'Up' run between Didcot Parkway and Southall. The first time that a Steam Locomotive has travelled at this speed for more than 40 years!

So, all is now in place for the public runs on June 29th; July 19th and July 27th (see my previous post above).

The first of the three 'Approved for 90 mph running' Excursions:

-Saturday 29th June: 'The Ebor Streak' [London Kings Cross-Potters Bar-York].

Here is the Route and latest Timings:

http://www.uksteam.info/tours/t13/t0629c.htm

It is worthwhile checking nearer the time/on the actual day for any changes, should you intend seeing 'Bittern' on this historic run.

Unfortunately, the second scheduled 90+ mph runs by 'Bittern' on Friday 19th July, 'The Tyne-Tees Streak', have fallen victim to Network Rail's 'Steam Ban', due to the the 'fire risk' during these exceptionally hot and dry weather conditions. This Excursion was due to be steam hauled between York and Newcastle, via Thirsk, Darlington and Durham (diesel hauled between Bristol Temple Meads and York) and return.

This has now been 'Postponed', to a date yet to be advised.

The third (and final) 90+ runs (York to London Kings Cross) are scheduled for Saturday 27th July. It remains to be seen if this suffers the same fate. (These runs were authorised for only a specific period of time, so it is to be hoped that NR will grant an extension, should this expire before the second and/or third runs can be completed).

Yes, as expected, 'The Capital Streak' [London Kings Cross-York] on Saturday 27th July has also been 'Postponed'. New date to be advised.

The new dates for the 'Postponed' Excursions (due to the NR 'Steam Ban' during the recent exceptionally dry and hot weather conditions) have now been announced:

'The Tyne-Tees Streak' [York-Newcastle (and return)]: Friday 30th August (Postponed from Friday 19th July).

'The Capital Streak' [York-Kings Cross (diesel hauled Kings Cross-York)]: Saturday 31st August (Postponed from Saturday 27th July).

I will post the Route and Timings nearer the dates.

OOPS :( :( :( :(.

UPDATE: BITTERN TRIPS POSTPONED

Regrettably, at very short notice, tomorrow and Saturday's 90mph trips with Bittern to Newcastle and King's Cross (respectively) have both been postponed, for a second time.

The reason, again, is fire risk related.

Please pass on this information to anyone who was intending to enjoy these trips, and more importantly, travel on one or both of them.

Capital Streak now on 7th December.
Trip gets to York at 11:15 am with departure at 13:50 and an arrival time at Kings X around 6pm.

Also 60009 is running from Kings Cross to Lincoln via the Joint Line for the Christmas Market.

Not sure when the other run is (if it happens at all).

Provisional timings will be added later on.

Just for the record, after being twice postponed (due to the 'fire risk' during the very dry weather, earlier this year) the planned second and third '90+ mph' runs by 4464 'A4' Class Steam Locomotive 'Bittern' DID take place on the 5th and 7th December 2013. (Unfortunately, I was not in a position to report on these at the time).

-Thursday 5th December - 'The Tyne-Tees Streak': 'Bittern' became the fastest Steam Locomotive ever recorded, between Newcastle and York, covering the 80 miles in under 67 minutes. This beat the previous record, set by 'Silver Fox' in 1946. The 'magic' speed of 90+ mph was recorded at several of the permitted sections along the run, including an amazing 93 mph when passing through Darlington Station. This, with a Train having a gross weight of 385 tons.

- Saturday 7th December - 'The Capital Streak': On the return of 'Bittern' to Kings Cross Station, the 90 mph mark was reached/exceeded (again, along the permitted sections) at various points along the way. 92.5 mph was achieved at Corby Glen (south of Stoke Junction) and at Tallington Junction (south of Essendine). This, with a Train having a gross weight of 420 tons.

An appropriate finale to the Celebrations marking the record breaking run of 'A4' Class Steam Locomotive 'Mallard' of 126 mph, 75 years ago (in 1938).
